My son is headed off this summer to train in Boston for 10 weeks then to college a few hours away from home. I want to get him a flashlight to carry in his truck. I am thinking small(ish), super bright and potential to use for striking in a self defense situation.

Any input appreciated.

What's the budget?

Low end is probably Streamlight HL-X. High end Cloud Defensive MCH or Modlite PLHv2.

18650 rechargeable for all of them.

Budget is flexible, $200 or leas I suppose.

As for rechargeable, it would need to be usb plug in of the whole light. I don’t see him maintaining a charger separately and rotating batteries out.

For $200, get him a PD36R and a TK20R V1.

Or a TK20R V2 and a E28R.

One for the dorm room, and one for the truck. All are USB rechargeable. The TK20Rs have strike bezels.

I agree. I have a few Fenix lights and they have been really good. I can't remember all the model numbers but my last is a PD36 TAC and it's been great. And they give Military/Veteran discounts

For what it's worth, I've had 2 LED defenders fail. One of them (that they already fixed the first time it failed) is in the process of failing a second time as we speak. It still lights up, but it has a small dead spot in the center of the LED.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

I'd recommend 2-3 lights at lower price point and decent but not super construction. He'll lose some, roommates and friends will use one and innocently lose or pocket, they will break, etc. Lots of options these days.

I'm sure he's a perfectly good son, no reflection on him!

I agree with Georgair.

Get several inexpensive ones that he can keep in his car, home, etc.
They can get lost, "borrowed" and he may not end up carrying them around with him on his person so more is better right now.

I’ve got a couple of the Fenix rechargeables. They use a magnetic charging cable. It’s easy to leave it in place charging and the cable can also charge in your car on trips. USB ports and whatnot kind of suck.

They also have the 2 way pocket clips that allow you to clip on a baseball cap for a poor man’s headlamp. I’ve used that feature more than I thought I would.

It also has a magnetized tail so you can use it attached to something metal if needed.

Another Fenix fan here. I am particularly fond of the PD Series and the E Series. An E35 currently resides in my pocket.

I also like the Streamlight Protac HPL. It's a bit larger light so it may have some striking capability. Most importantly, it takes a USB charger in the side.

While I can see the argument for a handheld flashlight I have find myself gravitating to headlamps more and more. The ability to have both hands free to do whatever is a great advantage.
