This is the result of “cultural enrichment”. They don’t seem to be following the French laws for firearms ownership though…

He's a natural-born French citizen, born in Rouen in 1994.
Long before the recent influx of Middle Easterners/North Africans into Europe, France had a long history of North African and Middle Eastern association through their colonies in places like Algeria and Syria. So there are quite a few multi-generational French families with North African/Arab ethnicity. Same with Vietnamese/Cambodian/Laotian from France's colonies in Southeast Asia.

Will add that a large part of those sons of France have never properly merged into society. They walk a particular grey line of not feeling french nor africans/arabs/take your pick. When you learn about riots or trouble in France you’ll find them in the front rows of every social conflict.
The eternally unhappy.
Their efforts to integrate are nill or almost imperceptible. IMO.

This bears repeating. In fact they often expect the opposite to happen. They expect to be accommodated culturally.

If they task the GIGN with finding and dealing with all associated with this attack, the gang will undoubtedly be dealt with appropriately.

It would be hard to protect against this type of determined ambush.
Not really, assuming that they believed that the prisoner was a high risk and took necessary precautions.
Not counting everything else wrong with this situation, the driver of the van was clearly not trained on how to respond in such a situation. So either they didn't consider the drug guy high risk, or they have no clue how to handle high risk transportation.
I once had a prisoner tell me that his family would try to "rescue" him. I told him "fine! You get shot first"!

I am sure they will up their security after this incident, but how much security can you actually have when you are transporting hundreds of inmates daily to courts, medical appointments, transfers etc. I would say on a daily basis in the U.S. there are thousands of transports each day. There is not enough manpower or money to make them all completely secure, and this guy was not in prison on multiple murder charges.

I read that the normal situation involving transport to prison usually had 3 guards involved. In this instance, there were 5 guards and two vehicles so it appears they had already increased security.

I saw how the Italians moved their Mafia chasing magistrates.
Two lead motorcycles, four lead cars, 1 full size armored bus (think Prevost size interstate bus) 4 trail cars, two trail motorcycles.
At toll gates, the four lead cars flank the lane the bus will take, and close it off, the bus and the 4 trail cars go through at about 80 mph, two of the trail cars pass the bus, and the 4 cars at the toll gate peel out, catch up, and re-take the cruising formation.
Very impressive to see.

I'm sure there's a French variation in some Luc Besson movie or other, too. Though nothing is quite as cinematic as the life of Pascal Payet, who officially holds the world record for most prison escapes by helicopter (three).

They certainly went to a lot of trouble to "rescue" him. I wonder if he's even still alive? With a conviction, and other trials pending, maybe they were afraid he'd turn snitch and wanted to eliminate the risk?

The van probably had much more power than the small car in front of it. I suspect the van driver panicked, and did nothing.
I would have pushed the small car out of the way, using the engine and traction of the van. I agree with someone's comment above, they had little training.
