"Give me one hour with your cell phone"
Watching a detective show last week and the detective say's "Give me one hour with your cell phone and I will know everything about your life."

I think most of us hear something like that and would agree. But just think about that for a minute.

Wait till they find out that all the time they spent on the cellphone stuck against their ear caused brain cancer.

You would only see a small fraction of my kids’ pictures on my phone in an hour, and if you cared far more time, you’d see the occasional viewing of some gun things and hockey things.
This is my social media and I’m not terribly interesting for a millenial.

The same concept would have applied to a personal journal, photo albums, or diary from days of olde.
Smartphones are just electronic versions.

They would see thousands of work photos. I document the steps to make parts and of setups used to do so. Saves a lot of time instead of writing it all down. Thank God for cheap memory that allows this to occur.

Then they would see more of various topics like Victorian era buildings, antiques, guns, knives, cars, recipes, family & friends.

That one hour would bore them to tears. Think of sitting through a dull documentary.

There was a Director of Intelligence ( whose name forget ) that said a few years ago that “ only a fool uses or carries a cell phone”.

You'd see my posts here, on one other local gun forum, my Amazon purchase history, and a bunch of pictures of my kids, my dog, my guns, and some targets. The call logs would show calls from work, my wife, and spam. Texts would be the same, plus family. It would be pretty booring, and wouldn't really show you much that you couldn't just get here.

What are you gonna do? Call people I never talk to and ask them about me?

Unless it’s an iPhone and. Refuse to unlock it for them. Then it’s just an expensive paperweight.

If FaceID has been properly set up the thief is out of luck.

You shouldn’t believe everything you hear on a detective show.

The government can also use your thumbprint to access your phone legally.

Afaik, when the phone is turned off it will require the numerical PIN to unlock even if you have enabled Face ID. It is so for thumbprint (my iPhone is an older generation).

I always turn my phone all the way off crossing borders. Same with TSA, and if I see a police checkpoint. I do not approve of fishing expeditions.

They won't need an hour and they will only see the tip of the iceberg. My phone is just for when I'm not around my laptop.

What happens if one always uses a numerical PIN and elects not to setup faceid or touchid?

My understanding is that the police cannot compel you to provide the numerical PIN. Your face or your fingerprint though can be used without your permission.

Coming into the country through customs and immigration they cannot compel you to provide the PIN but they can confiscate your phone if you don't. They can also severely delay you, causing you to miss your connecting flight or other scheduled event (cruise, family event, work obligation, etc).

That's why you should only fly with a burner phone, let them have it. Pick up another when you land LOL

My iPhone 12 and 14 didn’t have TouchID. Just FaceID. And FaceID is defeated if I close my eyes.

All I have to do is enter 4 digits on a lock screen and mine will wipe itself. Yes, if they really wanted to they could find some of my data, but like someone else stated, they would be bored and have wasted a to of time.

I think the greater danger is people who post every move of their life on social media for all to see, no need to get their phone.

Is that on an iPhone? If so is it an Apple feature or some add on?
