Rent control had disastrous effects in NYC.

“SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Faced with a housing shortage and skyrocketing rents, Oregon is poised to become the first state to impose mandatory rent controls, with a measure establishing tenant protections moving swiftly through the Legislature.

A state legislative House committee on Wednesday backed the measure, sending it to the full chamber for a vote as soon as next week. The state Senate passed it last week.

Gov. Kate Brown told reporters she expected the full House to approve the measure. “I look forward to signing the bill,” said Brown, a Democrat…”

While the zoning with its "urban growth boundaries" is horrible. Maybe I won't keep my current home as a rental after I move...

So the state will limit rent increases, will they also limit property tax increases? If owner costs go up, in part due to property tax increases, how are they expected to stay in business, if they can't fairly price the their property, based on all market factors, including property taxes?

A great way to eliminate what few rental properties exist now.
This has been tried over and over again and it always reduces inventory making things worse for those needing to rent.

The principal reason that there’s a housing shortage. Rent control will make it worse.

Well, as most know, any part of Oregon west of the mountains has become a wide open lib "paradise". Only it got so bad they have started migrating east and are actually infesting western north Idaho with their silliness.

Just like the northern counties here in Virginia.

Liberal assholes got tired of living in Maryland after they screwed that up, so they moved into N. Va to get away from it. Then promptly started building what they had run away from in Maryland! To say libs are stupid is a huge understatement.

I am leaving. The super majority on top of what Kate Brown has already done to this state is sickening.

I realized this year that we won't be retiring here. It's still quite a ways off, but I only see things getting worse, not better.

Like most liberal policies, its a way of buying votes with other peoples money. There are generally many more renters than landlords.

Please come the day when we take back our government by whatever means necessary. We’re getting pushed out of desirable locations to retire. I’m sick to death. Enough of this insanity.

The problem is that we're outnumbered. Luckily the lefties have been concentrating in a small number of states. So at the national level, the features built into the constitution that prevent the big states from dictating to the small states have helped us.

But at the state level, there's no really any of these types of protections. When the lefties become the majority, they call the shots. And as they spread like the plague, they'll take over more and more states. FL, GA, and TX are close to flipping.

Isn't Oregon also trying to let 16 year olds vote? Makes sense that the 2 proposals are coming from the same people.

Rent control shrinks inventory while increasing demand. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Plus OR SB501 would limit us to buying only 20 rounds a month plus other restrictions.

It passed and was signed. {sigh} rent control, oh joy.

quote:
Oregon Gov. Kate Brown (D) signed a bill into law on Thursday that creates mandatory, statewide rent control. The bill makes it illegal for landlords to raise rent by more than 7 percent plus inflation each year and goes into effect immediately. This is the first statewide rent control law in the country. "Every Oregonian should have access to housing choices that allow them and their families to thrive," Brown tweeted with a video of her signing the bill into law.

We ran into some of this shit years ago when we had a rental house in NY state. Locals were telling us how much we could charge. We finally sold the place and decided that any potential profits were not worth the potential losses. Sold it and never looked back.

Would we rent another one? Absolutely NOT!

Too damned many bureaucraPs getting involved and have no damned idea what they are doing.

That is a given! I wonder what all the Oregon residents who live east of the mountains are saying.

Maybe we just had bad luck, the the renters we had were among the lowest form of life on the planet.

They all threaten to sue you if they don't get their deposit back after leaving the place in shambles. One was growing drugs on the property, and another thought he should get at least part ownership of the place after paying rent for several years, "After all," he said, "I paid for this place."
