You are traditionally supposed to wrap them up in cheesecloth or similar that has been well dampened, then redampen the cloth periodically. I decided to pour “a little” directly over the cake a few years ago. Guess I went overboard, because by the end of the week the tin was oozing boozy goo all over the counter.

Yes, cheesecloth works best. My grandmother would start soaking her fruitcakes in October. By Christmas they were perfect. If you want to shorten the process you can use a fork to punch holes in the top and then drizzle the bourbon in.

Or you could just order one, pre-soaked in KY Bourbon, from KY..

I cut a wedge of fruitcake, about 1-1/2” at its back, and put it in a small bowl. Then I pour a tablespoon of bourbon over the wedge, most of which runs down into the bowl.

As I fork off each piece of fruitcake I work it around in the bourbon at the bottom of the bowl.

Re: “Are you sure it’s not the bourbon?”
I don’t understand that question.

I got the fruit cake yesterday. So thanks to this forum and to you for another experience.

I tasted it a slice, first without bourbon. It had a good taste. I don't have any contrast to it as I don't think I've ever had fruitcake, bad or otherwise.

Then I drizzled some bourbon I got as a gift; it was a decent sipping bourbon as I recall. Maybe it's just me but it seems the bourbon covered the taste of the fruitcake.

And, now, I'm thinking my neutral reaction to the combination is I don't like combos like "waffles & chicken." So I think I'll enjoy them separately but maybe together, not combined. But I do thank you for the experience.

I said, "Are you sure it's not the bourbon" meaning if the fruit cake is just a good excuse to have some bourbon.

I placed the fruitcake back in the tin and put it in the fridge. Hopefully, it will stay until Christmas. If it dries out some, that'll be a good reason for some bourbon.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

I’m the only one in my family, and most likely in my zip code that eats fruit cake. Love those things!

An annual present from my brother and SiL. Many folks disparage fruitcake, but they’ve probably not tasted a Collin Street Bakery fruitcake. Especially with a bit of bourbon poured over it. Delectable!

I don’t have a sweet tooth, and seldom eat cake, but it’s the exception that proves the rule.
