Brought to you by the youthful idiots of Portland. An idealistic but, naive millennial, with a narrow group of friends and a shallow outlook on the world, decided to have a 'Reparations Happy Hour'. ...cause nothing says healing like soft-peddled bigotry. Roll Eyes
'Reparations Happy Hour’ Invites White People to Pay for Drinks

quote:
In Portland, Ore., organizers of the “Reparations Happy Hour” invited black, brown and indigenous people to a bar and handed them $10 bills as they arrived, a small but symbolic gift mostly funded by white people who were asked not to attend.

Brown Hope, a local activist organization, wanted the event, which was held on Monday, to be a space for people of color in a mostly white city to meet one another, discuss policy issues and plan potential action.

While it was far from the full-scale reparations sought by some as penance for the horrors of slavery and continuing racial injustice, Cameron Whitten, the 27-year-old activist who organized the event, said there was one similarity: It made attendees feel as if their pain were valued and understood.

The economist Robert Browne once estimated a fair value for reparations of $1.4 trillion to $4.7 trillion and wrote that reparations should ''restore the black community to the economic position it would have had if it had not been subjected to slavery and discrimination.'' http://www.foxnews.com/us/2018...-pay-for-drinks.html

Fair value, eh? Ok, but if they had not been subjected to slavery here in the US, wouldn't they still be in Africa then with all their African brothers and sisters? How about we ask them which country they'd prefer to be living in today. A country in Africa or here in America. If they choose Africa, let's rework those numbers a bit, shall we? I'm thinking about 100 bucks as a fair value of their economic position in that case (I'm being generous). If they choose America, we'll just call it good and won't charge for travel expenses. How'd that be?

The problem with all of this seems to stem from the voluminous space inside their bubble heads.

First seek reparations from West Africa. Then seek reparations from England and the Moors. Then seek reparations from the US. In order and proportion the US is relatively clean on this. Any amount of time slavery was practiced during the period after the founding was paid for with the blood of 618,222 men and the suffering of their families.

The long running welfare bill probably far outweighs the reparations bill.

If you had any pride would you grub for $10?

A great candidate would be my buddy who is about a 1/2 shade of white darker than albino, but puts African American as his ethnicity. It's true too as he was born in Africa because both of his parents were American missionaries serving in Africa.

It really angers the perpetually aggrieved when he identifies himself as African American on forms & applications. It'd blow their mind if he asked for his "fair" share.

Plain and simply real descendants of actual slaves wouldn't be here. People have this false belief that whitey was roaming the African countryside kidnapping Africans and bringing them to the plantation. Tribalism in African is the root of the supermajority of slaves brought to the US. When a tribe defeated another tribe or could kidnap from an opposing tribe, they either enslaved the survivors, women, and children themselves and sold the "surplus." It sounds horrible to write and obviously I'm morally opposed, but the "surplus" most likely would've been outright killed or starved to death.

However, my greatest objection to reparations is debts are much like prison sentences. The debt is paid in full from the estate upon death and so are prison sentences if an inmate dies before serving full term. I am not financially responsible for something my relatives may or may not have done much like a prisoner's family is not responsible to serve the remaining days of a prison term if an inmate dies in prison.

The problem with the idea of reparations for the ancestors of those who were slaves is if we take that logic then these reparations would have to be decided by the remaining Native Americans for the simple reason 'we' would have to give the land back to them and then they would then decide who deserves what.

Why do some people have
white guilt"? I just cannot understand these people. None of those who received the "reparations" have suffered anything deserving of reparations not did their parents. How long into our future will people demand payment for things that may have been done to relatives in our past? Each of us could go back into some line of our ancestry and find where someone mistreated our relatives. I can go back into my Cherokee Indian or Mexican side and find someone who mistreated my relatives. But you know what? None of that affected me generations later and it didn't affect them either. I grew up in poverty and worked my way out of it. I blame nothing of my childhood on anyone but my parents since they are ultimately the ones who were responsible for how I grew up. These people are nothing more than leeches, looking for the next host to suck dry.

Ok.

It's been estimated we spend up to $1 trillion/year on welfare programs. Leftists call that number inflated. Let's cut it in half, then.

Blacks make up about 13% of the U.S. population and approximately 55% of black households are on welfare.

7% of $500 million is 35.75 million. Times 54 years makes $1.9 trillion spent on black families.

With no end in sight. And that doesn't take into consideration all the other reparations, both forms both tangible and intangible, that have been paid over the decades.

Yeah, there's a lot of unwarranted, and probably entirely inaccurate assumptions in those numbers, but, still: I think the debt paid.

I know it may be a bit passé to say and use, but the US Constitution specifically prohibits Bills of Attainder (working “corruption of blood” upon descendants) and Ex Post Facto (making something illegal after-the-fact) laws being enacted by both the US Congress and the various States.

Logically, this should be the argument to use to terminate this “reparations” concept, but since when has logic ever been effective with “those people”.
