I'm coming up on 68yrs now. Having stroked back in 07' since, from the left side numbness and muscle spasticity, like flashguy, I've resorted to a recline chair and foot rest. Since I've several issues related to the stroke, I'm prescribed zolpidem (ambien) and also Xanax for anxiety. Sometimes it's the only way I can get to sleep. I've tried many OTC's like herbal stuff and melatonin but they leave me with bad headaches despite changing the mg's.

Before leaving my job after the brain surgery, a good hard days work at the power company kept me sleeping like a baby. Sometimes the cat will help me sleep too...

Before I left Columbus, OH in the fall of 2001 to enter law enforcement, I worked in the Union trades first as a Carpenter then as a laborer.

After a day of digging ditches and running jackhammers I never had to worry about going to sleep. I slept like a baby. I also never had to worry about going to the gym either except for cardio.

I miss those days....

I am fortunate to seldom have problems sleeping, but that may be due at least in part to following the practices that I coincidently saw displayed at a local medical office just recently.
What’s recommended:

No caffeine or alcohol several hours before bedtime.
Cool room. (That’s also claimed to help contribute to weight loss.)
Dark(!) room. I have aluminum foil over the windows and close the door as necessary to keep out stray light from outside.
Quiet(!) room. I know some people say they sleep better with a TV playing, but that drives me crazy because I can’t ignore it. In recent years I have a fan on to help with the sensation of coolness, but it’s just faint white noise.
Exercise during the day. I don’t get as much as I should, but when I do it definitely helps.

After having heard about it some time ago, I now practice the meditation technique of clearing my mind except for focusing on one sensation, and that usually puts me to sleep in short order if something is bothering me.

I take my primary blood pressure medication in the evening, but the diuretic in the morning to help avoid having to get up in the night.

Melatonin doesn't work for me.

Will be 59 in September.

Seems i can only breathe well enough to sleep when on my right side, but have to roll over, every once in a while, 'cuz a stiffening up and pain. Motorcycle crash 20 years ago broke a buncha stuff...

Tried melatonin years back, but it really didn't help.

Mebbe i should tap into that obin of sake in the cupboard Wink

I’m 52 and I haven’t had any sleep problems so far. I like to read when I go to bed and I can barely get through a page before I pass out. I could brink 5 beers or 5 cups of coffee before bed, it doesn’t affect my sleep at all.

Try a new mattress and pillow.

I never slept as good as I do before getting a memory foam mattress and the new My Pillow makes it even better.

Drinking to be able to sleep is not good for you.

Years back when I switched over to a sleep number bed it was like sleeping on a cloud when I finally found my correct number. It took a few nights and was completely different from my fiancé at the time, but it was a nice feature that both of us could adjust the mattress to our preferences. Regardless of what mattress suits your needs, they do improve the quality of your sleep.

Most insurance companies will cover a sleep study. Sleep medications disrupt sleep architechture as does alcohol. Go look up sleep hygiene and practice those priniciples as well. Uninterrupted sleep is not ucommon as you age.

That's the great irony for me, my whole life falling asleep was a battle. Now I go right out. I just don't stay asleep.

When I was eating sugar and lots of carbs, once I fell asleep I was good for as long as I wanted. I couldn't wake up. I could sleep as late and long as I like. Now off them, I fall asleep fast, but no long deep sleep. And when I wake up in the morning, there's no falling back to sleep.

I had a colonoscopy on Monday and for some odd reason that really knocked everything out of whack. I can count on one hand the number of times I've stayed awake until 3 or 4 in the morning on one hand. Last night was one of those nights. What pisses me off is that I was falling asleep at 7 sitting on the sofa watching TV. My wife has Unisom in the house. I tried it once, and I was in a fog until the middle of the afternoon the next day. Other over the counter sleep aids are worse. The cure is worse than the affliction in my case. Maybe I'll try 1/2 a tablet tonight.

I have 3 boys 6 and under. It has been 6 years since I have slept more than 5 hours in a row more than 2 nights in a row.

If I had the chance sleep would not be an issue.

My Colonoscopy last year was the best sleep I had in a long time.

Try a Benadryl tablet, they tend to make most people sleepy.
