It’s not limited to just the Army.....I caught two shitbags scheming to go to medical and invent some “back” issue, while several of us were on an ID run to another base because our computers were down. Best part was I had my blouse off and was asleep in the back seat of a van(no rank showing) I sat up and started taking notes and asking them both about how to do it- when they arrived at medical and found me in my blouse and I calmly told them both to do an about face and March away before they actually contributed to their courts martial proceedings. The look on their faces was priceless.

But yeah, shitbags are everywhere. We had them when I was a cop, we called them RODs...retired on duty. They were the one who never got to a call first, you’d see them driving around the block until another car showed up, they would volunteer to go sit with a crazy guy at the ER, they’d take alarm calls in other districts just to avoid actual work. Uggghh

With virtually every profession, there's lazy people out there that want nothing more but to scam the system. When I was in the applicant stage of my law enforcement career, I was found to have an asymptomatic physical condition that (according to medical experts) did NOT present an increased risk of work-related injury/disability. The condition was discovered through a routine, pre-employment physical examination that included a back x-ray. I spent literally YEARS providing the services without pay, demonstrating I could do the job and shouldn't be disqualified due to the "hidden handicap." Ultimately, I prevailed and went on to have a full career. My condition was never an issue, but seeing scammers work the system (including some who'd attempted to block my efforts to get hired) still makes me seethe. Their "gaming" for personal profit at the taxpayer's expense does harm far beyond the money wasted on the lazy individuals, it creates a toxic environment of mistrust.

Transfer to the corporate environment and you'll see it everywhere. Tons of "fake it until you make it" type mentality. So many people just gaming the system and don't do any work. I'm doing about 5 departments jobs at work because these people don't do shit. Get used to it man, it's never going to get any better. In fact, it will get worse.

Worked with several.

If they worked half as hard at doing their job as they do trying to get out of it...

Endeavor to persevere.

The world is full of people like that and worse.
I'm constantly amazed our world functions as well as it does with so many incompetents but apparently systems are based on the assumption that idiots are involved.

Regardless of the metric used to measure the 'stupid/lazy/incompetent', it always seems to be at least 50% of the population! Roll Eyes

I'm on active duty but it will end shortly (not short enough) and we have a guy who is a captain who is the laziest sack of shit I've ever met in my life. 15 years in service, never deployed, collects disability for something and is now trying to game the system to get 100% with (imaginary) PTSD so he doesn't have to pay property tax. Came here and was constantly asking our boss for time off to do nursing school online. How the hell someone does nursing school online is beyond me. Refused to go to military schooling because "I have to focus on nursing school." Did you come here to go to nursing school or work?

The huge kicker is that he asked for time off next week to get his car painted, that's the lazy part. The stupid part is that it's a 12 year old Toyota Corolla. When I asked him why he's spending so much money on an old car, he said because if he goes to trade it in, they'll give him more. Now to the incompetent part, he's stupid so they don't give any tasks to him. I told him today that I know he's doesn't like working but that's why we're here. This dipshit actually said, "I complete all the tasks assigned to me but I don't have any tasks assigned to me."

The longer I'm in the Army, the more I'm starting to see some people, those who are lifelong reservists who have never deployed despite being post-9/11 "veterans", treat the military as a means of welfare.

In the civilian world, your stupidity/laziness/incompetence simply gets you fired. Fired as in you don't get a paycheck anymore. In the military, being fired means they move you to a position with less work and less responsibility.

People like this all over, but if it’s a 15 year captain that’s never deployed, it is more a leadership/management problem than a shit bag problem. Pleanty of ways for a good leader to take action and boot a crap bag, than punt the problem somewhere else.

Do I get the feeling? No.
Do I know? OH HELL YES!

I try very hard to be "Police Sgt CPDSIG" and stay away from ""Marine Corps Sgt CPDSIG". Last week, some of my idiots pushed my buttons, and "Marine Corps Sgt CPDSIG" came out.

Does the Army no longer have an “up or out” system?

A 15 year CPT? My God, that’s like a 15 year Specialist! Eek

Why hasn’t this shitbag been shown the door already?

I suppose I got lucky to have excellent bosses. While I was at HSBC then later Capital One I never felt like I was surrounded by idiots. Sure there were a few chuckleheads but they were not the majority. It was basically the opposite.

I bitched endlessly about the antiquated computer systems and their many flaws. To my surprise my boss put me temporarily on a software development team whose only job was to try to break their programs and expose flaws. I actually miss working with my old team quite a bit.

I'm surrounded by them everywhere except here on SIGforum, with my colleagues at work, and in some other arenas, but yeah, my world is filled with people who are dangerous, dumb, lazy animals.

That officer seems like a tool. I guess times are different, or maybe situations.

I was fortunate having served with some really good officers. One in particular kind of mentored me. He asked what I was going to do after discharge and when I told him (I was 21 YO) I indented to go back to start college. His eyes lit up and we talked at length several times about options and how to get some of it paid for. A good guy. He came to see may the day I shipped out. No hugs and kisses and no future correspondence, but I appreciate the time he took with an E5.

I don't know about the Army, but the Air Force does. I was a 15-year Captain (10.5 years in grade) and was discharged. (I wasn't a no-good, just not good enough to make Major.) I countered by enlisting for 5 more years to retire as a Captain. Interesting times.

It’s not a feeling

It’s reality.

I am in the process of firing a guy who is lazy and incompetent and has risked business relationships worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

He is toast. He can do the work. He’s demonstrated that. And he can do very good work. But now he just doesn’t care and I don’t either.
