I use Marketplace frequently to buy and sell used lawn equipments. A good portion of my interactions are with Spanish speakers. Almost all Spanish listings have a link to translate to English. It safe to assume it does the same for the Spanish FB version "Castilin" in reverse. There are also numerous other translators with text to text, text to & from speech, and even real time in camera translations for face to face interactions.

As a buyer, I feels it is my responsibility to make sure I ask all the right questions before I make a purchase on FB. As a seller, I'd do my best to include the major points in the listing but I would not take back a closed sale if the buyer can't. read due to a language barrier. That's on them to proceed with the sale with that type of limitation.

Reading comprehension is not just a problem for the non-native English speakers.

The first Gunbroker deal that was routed to me for a transfer was a gun with a chunk of one wooden grip missing, like it had been dropped on concrete. I looked up the listing and that chip was clearly disclosed and photographed. Buyer showed for the transfer and was pretty chapped about it, seemed to think I had caused it. I pulled up the GB listing to show him. He acted very surprised.

A co-worker of mine had a very similar situation happen recently. We talked about it not even a month ago. He told the guy sorry, but the deal is done. A couple days after having this "disagreement" someone" broke the windshields on 2 his vehicles and threw a brick through his living room window around 2am.

Hope you didn't do the deal at your home. I meet folks at WAWA when I buy or sell something locally. I would give him his money back though. Mostly, because it's likely he was just trying to make a living. Losing the $$$ without use of the tools may be a real hardship for the guy.

Nah we met in the Costco parking lot. Him trying to make a living is the only reason I feel bad about it at all. I don’t need the extra $50, but he might.

Just because you're right in a situation (and you are in this situation) doesn't mean you can't have some grace for someone and give the benefit of the doubt.

So did he decide to meet you and exchange the goods for the cash?

Anyone with half a lick of sense, hispanic, white, whatever knows you don't get dewalt tools and batteries for $50...

You know meeting him at Costco will cost you $300 when you go inside after the transaction LOL

That's exactly why any transaction is done in a parking lot of a busy shopping center. I won't get robbed in an area like that and they will never know where I live. OPSEC all the way.

Honestly, I can see good arguments for both approaches (Tough, read the ad; and refund). Personally, I’d offer to refund, get it back, re advertise as coming “No batteries”. If the buyer elects to keep it, correctly understanding that he will need to buy batteries, fine. If not, unwind and move on.

It sucks to put more time into it, but it is worth taking the high road. (Unless he wants to keep the tools *and* get a refund. If that’s the case, he can get stuffed. Smile)

No response yet. Also I didn’t go into Costco…I have a love/hate relationship with that place and definitely don’t make quick trips.

I think that's where you went wrong. Not that people shouldn't be able to freakin' read!
Of course in this case, dude was just buying a picture probably.....

If it was priced accordingly and the ad stated the batteries didnt work, I would not have offered the refund, but I can appreciate you wanting to do what you think is right.

Life is full of plenty of opportunities to tell someone to fuck off, doesn't mean it's always warranted.

Just for future reference, those DeWalt batteries might could be revived with a simple trick. Many of them have a feature that prevents charging if the residual voltage gets too low. There are a few videos on yoo-toob that show how to "jump start" a dead / non-charging DeWalt battery, so that it will charge up and work normally. I was able to save two 5.0 AH 20V batteries using the method in the video. Disclaimer - do at your own risk and your results may vary.

Good luck.

Yup. No reasons to complicate it more than necessary. Oh, and the next time, spell everything out in the bill of sale that needs to be signed.

Sounds like your ad said the batteries were bad, but when you met in person you attached a battery and showed that they worked. I can see honest confusion on his part, so I’d agree to the refund and just eliminate the batteries as others have said.

Do what you want in this case, here's some future advice.

You really need to be crystal clear that there are no refunds on marketplace. Here's a VERY common scam. You sell it with working batteries, they message later in the day the drill doesn't work, and want a refund. You agree to refund and they bring it back to you with a dead drill, dead batteries and keep your good ones. Beware lots of return scams with counterfeit parts.

I have a few SIGs.

all of this. I'd be a good person in this situation, having traveled extensively and appreciated people who helped me out when I didn't speak their language. For him, it was probably a lot of money and a means to earn a living. You'll be able to easily move it to the next person in line so nothing but time spent to do right by someone. Karma points if nothing else.

But yes, dude should have translated your post to a language he understands because you listed accurately.
