You DON'T need to cut out red meat, scientists claim
I mostly ignore articles about health effects of various foods. “X is bad for your health”. A year later, it’s “X isn’t a health risk after all .” This article fits the pattern. Moderation is the key. I’m tuning up for a scrumptious BMT (Bacon, Mayo, Tomato) sandwich tomorrow.
“There is no reason to cut back on red meat for health reasons, according to a controversial claim by a group of leading scientists.
Researchers in Canada, Spain and Poland have cast a shadow over eating advice adopted by health organisations around the world.
In a landmark paper, the academics analysed past studies of how eating meat affected the health of more than four million people.
They found no evidence that eating beef, pork and lamb could increase the rates of heart disease, cancer, stroke or type 2 diabetes – despite fears.
And the team also said they found nothing strong enough to signal that people should cut down on red meat, adding that the quality of evidence was too low for findings to be concerning…”
Don't ya just hate blanket statements? I guess no one would listen to the preference to a balanced diet.

I have never really been too overly concerned about what I eat. Cholesterol is good. Physicals have always come back great. I’m in decent shape, even though I don’t work out (5’9” and 170 lbs - yeah, I’m a small guy). Red meat is a staple here at the Cooker household. If it’s not a steak, the Mrs. is using it in a Korean dish. If not beef, it’s pork. Once in a while we have chicken, but neither of us care too much for it.
Next year it’ll be a different paper. Something like steak causes leprosy.

I'm glad this is what I've always subscribed to! Balance and moderation are the key.

The amount of red meat eaten has to do with your homocysteine level. Homocysteine can cause arterial damage and blockage as the blood vessels are repaired. You need to have a blood test to determine the level and the use B-50 Complex to reduce the levels. I try to keep mine around 6 micomoles per liter of blood.

What the heck? The stress people cause themselves by worrying about every dang thing we can scan, measure or test on our bodies is going to kill them faster than their homocysteine.

My daughter started the whole vegan thing last year and started having problems. Her mother does it so she figured she'd try it. She stopped the vegan thing and now eats meat again and she feels better. I grew up in the meat business and I'm still doing it. I consume quite a bit of beef, pork and chicken. Never listened to the "experts" on what I should/shouldn't eat.
I'd rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I'm not.

What are you talking about? Homocysteine is a common amino acid and high levels have only shown a correlation with early CVD, not necessarily causative.
Choline and L-carnitine are the primary culprits in red meat as a downstream metabolite has shown a positive causative effect on arteriosclerotic plaque formation. Moderate red meat consumption with the right combination of dietary nutrients/factors is what the article suggests. A healthy diet is still high in fruits, vegetables and fiber.

Despite my advice to the contrary, my wife takes a statin. She is not overweight, doesn't smoke and eats mostly rabbit food. She came home one day and said her doctor said she had to take a statin, because her cholesterol was high. My reply was that both her parents lived into their mid-nineties and that genes will trump cholesterol any day of the week. As for vegetarians, I heard a comedian once say, "You show me a guy, who says he's a vegetarian and I'll show you a guy who's trying to f**k a vegetarian." I believe it

red meat BAD -- protein good...
I'll keep doing what I've always done: balanced diet over-weighted on the protein. good sleep. portion control. exercise 4-5 days a week. drink water. vices in moderation : sweets, beer, french fries, coffee, etc
