To which he is correct as 4 years ago our upstairs unit drain clogged and that drain is connected to the downstairs unit and all the water flooded through the downstairs furnace.

He wants to use an Amana side discharge inverter heat pump. Which sounds pretty neat because it can vary its power usage. So while it runs more it runs at a lower power when needed. With the unit running more it’s better at removing more humidity which we have plenty of. The unit is quieter and smaller. It can also be mounted on the side of the house. I think that will be good because the side of my yard is sloped and the units don’t stay level long.

He also wants to use a matching 80% gas furnace to replace the old.

All to the tune of $9,000 and the heat pump qualifies for $2k tax credit. So I am looking at $7,000 total to include a much more efficient system and getting a new furnace when the other folks wanted $8k on a less efficient unit that did not qualify for the tax credit and did not include replacing the furnace.
