I know you are probably on the road. I would agree with those calling for you to skip Memphis. but push just past it to Jackson, Tn. Much nicer small town vibe. I have stayed here a number of times making a two day trip to Dallas from Lynchburg (just south of Charlottesville).

Safe travels.

There are a number of new motels in Marion which is near the intersection of 64 and I-55. It is far enough away from West Memphis to be relatively safe. I have stayed at the Hampton there several times.

Do---or do not.
There is no try.

Hope you're safely on your way and get to Charlottesville in plenty of time to relax and settle in. Despite not being in a rush, driving all that distance and then going to a memorial service on top of it can be more than a little stressful.

Thanks for the offer, but I don't think I'll need anything. Another family member is staying at the same hotel I'm at and we had a family gathering jn the afternoon/evening. The service is Sunday at 1500. I'll head back to Dallas Tuesday morning.

Slight thread drift, have you ever been to Elkton?

Frequently. Love the brewery and that’s the Ace I use for my Stihl equipment.

I want to visit there perhaps this summer, a 3 1/2 hr drive for me.
Recently purchased a Ruger LCRx from Blue Ridge Outdoors shop. Elkton looks like a nice small town. That’s why I asked you about Elkton.

Let me know if you make it out this way. I’m only about 20 miles from Elkton.

Several inches of snow fell last night. Going to make driving difficult.

Keep us updated when you can. That extra difficulty will require more concentration and create stresses. It'll sap you. You'll likely be exhausted when you stop. Try and allow a bit more time for rest than you think. No matter, because you've driven in worse I'm sure at some point.
I've also said a little prayer for you, that you stay safe.

The snow will likely create some nice scenery at spots along the way.

I still have an issue with a part about to fall off the car. I couldn't avoid a huge hunk of tire in the road on Saturday and drove over it, with a lot of concussion. Apparently it caused part of the driver's side rail under the door to come loose, and I don't want to drive with it like that. I wouldn't want it to come off on the highway. It doesn't appear to be structurally relevant, but it needs to be fixed. I was going to try doing that today, but the snow has pretty well put that idea at rest.

My relative from Michigan who was also here for the funeral was supposed to leave the hotel this morning but has opted for another night in the hotel. We're about to see if we can find some place to eat that we can drive to--this hotel does not have a restaurant.

I've dealt with mechanical problems on the road several times and it's never been fun. What you have doesn't sound major as these thing go, but yes you don't want to make a long highway trip with a less than reliable vehicle. It will all work out. A few bucks perhaps and you'll feel better driving home. Your cats are missing you.

Update. The dangling part has been removed and stored inside the car. The car is at the local Ford shop being repaired. I have been told it will be ready for travel by noon tomorrow, and I hope to get on the road shortly thereafter. With luck I'll be home (Dallas) late on the 8th.

I have had communication with my Handyman's wife and all is well in Dallas. He did prep the house for the freeze and the cats are OK. He's OK, too--just wasn't answering his phone. Life goes on.

flashguy,
I just drove through Charlottesville, VA on my way to my wife's sister's house near Culpeper, VA.
We spent half the week in VA and half in MD at her brother's and now we are back in St. Louis.
I'm very familiar with I-64 having driven it at least once a year for the last 33 years.

It sounds like you're having a (mostly) good trip. Enjoy the rest of it.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

When you get close to the Little Rock area on I-40, watch for signs for I-440 South towards Texarkana. You will avoid the clusterfork at the I-30 / I-40 interchange. I-440 connects to I-30 south of Little Rock.
