Carving Project - Pub Sign
I’ve really fallen in love with relief carving, signs in particular but not exclusively.
My wife travels to various week long teacher institutes during the summer and on one of them she brought back a book called Taverns of the American Revolution. I got inspired to carve a pub / tavern sign. Here’s my attempt at one.
I actually got to combine two of my hobbies (blacksmithing) on this by adding some forged banding & hand cut nails.
I retire in 5 months & 16 days and I’ve been looking forward to spending more time in my shop getting better acquainted with my tools / toys.
I’ve thought about buying a CNC carver but you’re not carving.
For me there’s nothing as satisfying as feeling the razor sharp edge cutting through wood to reveal the image you have in your head.

Any other members here do relief carving or carve anything ?

Love the carvings at this stage.

On to the stains & dyes

Time to fire up the forge

Beautiful craft.

Looking at the project, I couldn't help thinking that would look real fine if you did one that said 'Tun Tavern'.

You could hang it on the wall above all that Sam Adams you buy every year.

Those are awesome! You're doing a great job.

I do a bit of wood carving. I've done chip carving, one relief carving, and a few other things, and a bunch of Christmas ornaments, but my "thing" is carving walking/hiking staffs and canes, nothing too complicated or fancy.

I was out in Tucson AZ recently and met their wood carving club and took an informal lesson from a member who does amazing relief carving.

I'm probably more of a sawdust and chip generating amateur, I'm not artistically talented. Our local wood carving group in OKC has some guys who are true amazing artists, just astounding to me, at least, at the beautiful wildlife carvings they do, for example. They are true artists in every sense of the word.

Congratulations on your upcoming retirement and the continued growing of your wood carving talent, you're doing amazing work.

Dooooood - you ever considered commissions?

Wow. What talent you have been given. Just unbelievable!

Until I get faster at it there’s no real money in it. The $$ per hour needs to improve before I start selling. As of now I still give everything away that I carve.
I have 20hrs in this piece.
If it sells for $100 , I made $5 an hour.
I make $400 for an 8hr shift of overtime.
So I really need to get faster but lettering takes time for me to get perfect.

$5/hr is chicom wages with a router and cnc machine.

$10/hr is Filipino hand made on mahogany.

$20 - $40 /hr range for American made in black walnut, red oak, or American birch (plus metal work) is more realistic - depending on finish quality.

Do not sell your skill set short. Wink

Your talent is very impressive, Grumpy. That sign is awesome!

By the way, the hand-made bottle opener I won in your karma a few years ago continues to be used every weekend. I still love that blue handle!
