This is what I did. Last month I put an EVGA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER XC ULTRA GAMING in my new build. Runs everything great. I'll look into the next generation of cards when price and availability stabilizes.

More in depth, although the i9-9900 & 2080 are supposed to be able to handle it fine so I may not need to do it at all

- how many monitors do you plan to use? I know some flight sim folks run more than one. Do you know the resolution and refresh rates you are trying to run the game at?

I was hoping to do three monitors but then found out it can severely effect frame rate so I may just do either one large TV or a large curved monitor, I haven't decided yet. Maximum settings at 4k but I'd probably run at 1080 most if not all of the time

- any specific peripherals like a HOTAS or rudder pedals you plan to use? Just trying to get an idea how many USB ports you need.

I may get a full setup with rudder pedals, yoke, throttle quadrant, etc. Debating adding a USB card or just having an external hub.

- How much does a loud PC bother you?

I personally don't care since I'll probably have headphones on the entire time.

In my opinion your motherboard needs depend greatly on if and how much you want to overclock. The power draw of a 9900k is...highly variable! I second the call to buy an NVMe M.2 drive, not a 2.5” SSD as a primary drive, although maybe you already did that. I didn’t check the most recent pc part picker link!

The Gigabyte Aorus Z390 boards would be my go-to If you can find them. The Aorus Elite is just fine, but the more expensive ones are also good, just more expensive than you really need. The ASUS Maximus line of Z390 boards Are also pretty good, but I feel like ASUS got a little too proud of their motherboards price-wise. I’m not a big fan of the ASRock or MSI Z390 boards. The ASRock Taichi and Taichi Ultimate are good hardware, but I dislike working with ASrocks BIOS.

For a 2080 Super or Ti, EVGA is my go-to. Even their two-fan cards tend to perform very well. MSI’s models with triple-fan coolers are good, but I avoid their two-fan models. Gigabyte has had some issues with fans dying on their graphics cards, but it is sort of all over the map in terms of which models are affected. I can’t keep track of them all, so I am avoiding them for now. ASUS makes good cards, but again I feel like they are overpriced. So, an evga 2080 Super FTW3 would be great, but their 2080 Super XC cards are also good and might be easier to find. Their hybrid cards with a built-in 120mm radiator are neat, but you probably won’t need it with the case you want and the headphones!

Lastly, you might want to consider taking the glass off the front of the View 71. Between the glass and the dust filter, if you use it, there is a very real chance of choking off the airflow to your radiator, even with three fans on it!

Anyway, have fun. Seems like it will be a beastly build.

Try and hold out on your video card purchases! - new 3000 series Nvidia coming out soon (few months).

I recently started redoing my 5+ year old computer (i7 4790K, 16GB G.Skill Trident PC3 2400MHZ ram, Gigabyte Z97X-UD5H-BK, Evga 980 ti, 3x 512GB Samsung 850 Pro, Corsair AX860i, Corsair H100i V2 cooler, Corsair 330R case, HP 30" ZR30W monitor (2560x1600 30 bit), Dell 24" monitor of some kind, LG Bluray burner) .

So far swapped the following:
Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Ultra Motherboard
i5 9600K CPU
16GB 3200MHZ G.Skill ram (non RGB Version, Samsung B-die)
512GB Samsung 970 Pro M.2
Fresh install (first since initial Windows 10 install) of Windows 10 Pro version 2004

Stage 2 will be:
Be Quiet! Pure Base 500DX Mid tower case (currently hard to find)
1TB M.2 Samsung Evo Plus drive (all 2.5" ssd's will have been replaced)
Noctua NH-U12A CPU cooler
New Video card, will patiently wait for new ones (RTX 3080 or what??)
(Have also thought about the AMD 5700XT in the meantime)

Will keep the awesome AX860i psu, lose the Bluray burner which is never used.
Possibly new main monitor at 1440K

I like Sigs and HK's, and maybe Glocks

You mentioned the 10th gen chips being hard to find now, but also being some months out for MSFS. I would plan for the better chip if you're already buying such high end parts and just make that part a priority to grab at first opportunity.

I also agree with those that say to wait for the 30XX GeForce stuff.

Yeah I am waiting on everything, just trying to get my ducks in a row beforehand. I'm guessing MSFS won't be out before Q4 of this year, if it's even out before Christmas.

My current rig has a 1TB SATA Ssd for OS and Photoshop, a 1TB M2 SSD for games, 4TB of Western Digital Blue hard drive for media, and a 4TB external for backup of important photos. Yes, I need 4TB of backup. In fact, it’s my second such external drive. I maintain RAW files for jobs I do just in case I ever need to recreate something. Shoot a wedding and you’re looking at nearly 200gb of data in the RAW files.

The I9 9900k is a monster. I’ve got a 2080 Super in it and it’s pretty impressive. My rig is air cooled, but it’s got a massive cooler on the CPU, 5 case fans, and 2 fans on the GPU. If you’ve got M2 slots and don’t mind the up charge, they run rings around SATA.

Copaup, off topic but what's your preferred lens for indoor weddings? I don't plan on shooting weddings unless asked but I'm curious what you prefer for indoor portrait type shots.

Since you asked, and its your thread... Wink

Honestly, my go to lens is pretty pedestrian. I use a 28-300 Nikon lens for most of the work. Weddings are fast paced and changing lenses isn't really an option. The 28-300 gives me the ability to go wide for a group and zoom to catch the groom's face as the bride walks in while still being fast enough at f/3.5 to get reasonable performance in interior lighting. The beauty of digital is I can shoot A TON of frames and then cheat with Photoshop. For the set up shots like portraits or rings and such I use a fixed 35mm with f/ 1.8. Its a razor sharp lens and with that f stop gives a fantastically narrow depth of field.

I don't do many weddings (super stressful) and when I do I won't do them without a second photographer there. Doing a wedding right is really too much work for one person. My partner and I will divide up the tasks and the shots we want and set up accordingly.

Free advice. ALWAYS have a camera set up for a tight shot of the groom's face the moment the bride enters. It will be her favorite shot. I promise. You have to have two shooters because whoever takes that photo will miss the bride entering.

I'm a big fan of using two photographers. When we do senior portraits or engagements I like to lurk around with a long lens while my partner sets up the posed shots. The best photos of the session are often the ones I snap when the subject isn't aware I'm shooting. Real smiles always beat fake smiles. Jen will get them where we want them and how we want them and get them laughing and showing their personality and I'll snap away. I love shooting engagement sessions. Way more fun than the actual weddings.

That Nikon 28-300 is a workhorse. It's not fast enough for real low light work or taking action shots at a sporting event, but it's probably the best bang for a buck do it all that I've come across. Just expect to have to send it in for cleaning if you ever use it at the beach. That big tube zooming in and out pulls in a lot of air and you'll quickly get tired of removing dust spots from the sky...

The reason I push gamers towards NVMe drives is that the next generation of consoles looks like it is going to make heavy use of streaming in textures and data from primary storage to cut down initial load times and support larger maps. The game devs will want to use that same tech on their PC ports of major games if possible, so I’m suggesting NVMe drives for new gaming builds. I’m fairly sure I read about Flight Simulator trying to use that sort of tech in the new version coming out, but I’m a little fuzzy as I’ve only read one article about it.

However, you really not need the high read speeds. It should be fine to go with the slower write speed NVMe drives to get more capacity for less money. Flash drives have been switching to more bits per cell (MLC, TLC, QLC) and they have worse performance writing data and less write endurance, but are still blazing fast for reads. Just buy something from Intel, Samsung, or Crucial/Micron and you should be good in terms of quality. Heck, those three make the majority of the solid state flash memory in the world, so there is a good chance you are getting their stuff anyway!

Well the flight sim has been announced for release on August 18th. I'll probably start building shortly before or after. I was hoping to see when the RTX 3080 was going to be released but it sounds like it may not be announced until after then. Either way the 2080TI should be more than enough to handle it.

The 2080 ti has to handle it or it couldn't be played. The 3080 is going to be expensive and hard to come by for a while.
