FredwardAntique Photo Question
We're clearing the house of stuff. I have perhaps 200 photographs of people going back to the late 1800's. I know they are relatives, but I don't know who they are. I don't want to just throw them away as they may have value to someone. I don't want anything for them, but I don't want to waste them. Any suggestions?

arfmelHave any relatives that are on Ancestry? I bet you do, and may not know it.

jbcummingsI might be a pack rat. If I had any interest in them at all, I'd digitize them and store/preserve the originals. I have grandkids who might find such things of interest later in life, so YMMV.

4x5If you know who the people in the photographs are, go to FamilySearch.org (it's completely free), find the relatives, and upload the images (they're called 'memories' on FamilySearch). Don't get rid of them until you've done that. I guarantee there is someone out there would love to see them.

Exactly what I'm thinking. Usually, and hopefully, relatives but definitely antique-photo fans.
Even if it's merely a photo of an acquaintance of a relative, chances are that a relative might want it. If not, even "American Pickers" could be interested in them.

deepoceanIf there is any identifying information on the back, or within the frames, try to include that to give context to those who will look at them later. Sometimes the smallest details can provide critical information.

Sig2340Or make up elaborate tales about them an sell on some website or a craft fair.
I doubt the people in the picture will call you out.

This. I would also ask any family members if they are interested in them. You could also donate them, after scanning and uploading them, to your local historical society/museum.
