I'm headed out tomorrow AM towards Carlisle Pa. for the Carlisle Chrysler Nationals this coming weekend and I always wanted to check out Amish Country. I should have 6-8 hrs. available before I continue westward to check in at my hotel Friday evening. Any things you guys would recommend we do, or see? She likes shopping, I like local eats, drinking, and brewpubs, etc. It's just me and the Mrs. no kids. Thanks.

I can’t offer much as far as attractions go, but there are plenty of breweries around. Lancaster brewing co. Has two locations and they are always good for a beer and lunch. They have a location in Lancaster and one in Harrisburg. There is also troegs in Hershey.

Quips Pub is an old style English Pub in Lancaster. 457 New Holland Ave., Lancaster. A favorite of mine when I was teaching in the area.

A little bit fancier is Annie Baileys - another pub in Lancaster, short walk from the center square. It also has an English flavor to it.

Federal Taphouse, 201 N. Queen St. Serious selection of beer on tap. Not quite the pub feel that the others have.

Iron Hill Brewery, 781 Harrisburg Pike. Very good food, some very good beer. Pricy compared to the others. Right across the street from Franklin and Marshall College.

As far as shopping, North Queen Street has a selection of shops for several blocks. Antiques, food, clothing. The Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen has a shop there - quality handmade work by juried craftsmen and women. (My wife has some of her handwoven clothing there.)

If antiques hold your interest there as a few larger co-op antique complexes in Strasburg just east of Lancaster and more in Columbia just to the west, along the Susquehanna River. Also in Strasburg is the Strasburg Railroad. A private operation where you can ride the old wooden Pullman cars behind one of several steam locomotives. A nice, well run operation. Across the street there is the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum. Also a very nice display, inside and outside, of a wide selection of trains.

From Strasburg, north on 896 (I believe) you can reach route 30 and some outlet shopping right on 30 as you head west back toward Lancaster.

Plenty of good food around. I recommend Fireside Tavern in Strasburg for a place to eat. Great food and friendly atmosphere. Doesn’t hurt that your right in Amish country is that’s what your looking for. The Outlets are also 10-15 minutes away depending on traffic.

I grew up in the area, and Amish are everywhere. If your looking for the tourist trap type places Bird in Hand and Intercourse have everything you could want considering the Amish. Shaddy Maple Smorgasbord is up the road as well and I can guarantee you won’t leave that place hungry. Plenty of solid choices and things to do just be aware that the actual Lancaster area has gone somewhat yuppie and is becoming more highly populated.

Based off the post above if your looking for a gun shop to swing by I recommend Lanco Tactical in Elizabethtown over Trop Gun. Trop has an indoor range and a broader range, but Lanco is far superior concerning knowledge and customer service.

Carlisle was my main terminal when I drove for a living. It was all about work. That Mopar show is outstanding. Looks like your Saturday and Sunday will be better as Friday shows a chance of rain. I know you've been there before apf. When I went it was 105 degrees. You never seen so many fine cars in your life. Enjoy and take pictures.

Great info guys, plenty to keep is busy. Thanks for all the details as well Chris, 98, and John. We are headed out now. Shkuhn, thank for the Troegs reminder! David, did you drive for Roadway Express? We had a breakbulk in Harrisburg when I worked for them from ‘89-‘09.

I think federal taphouse closed. Asked my brother about the other week since he lives down there, and he thinks they closed for good at that location.

Lancaster County Brewery and Appalachian Brewery in lititz have good food as well and beer is pretty decent.

For amazing food, including the best pizza I've ever had, in a unique setting go to Luca restaurant in Lancaster. Also check out Intercourse for the Amish country experience. If you'd like to experience the #1 rated pub in America, go to Bulls Head Public House in Lititz.

I know you were asking about things to do in Lancaster on your way to Carlisle, but while you're in Carlisle, be sure to check out the U.S. Army Heritage & Education Center (USAHEC) at Carlisle Barracks.

https://ahec.armywarcollege.edu/

It's well worth a couple of hours just to walk around the displays outside, even if you don't pay to go into the museum.

Shady Maple. Smile Gorge yourself silly on all the PA Dutch foods you can stand. Plus, there's a gun shop and range right across the parking lot!

I'll also ditto Appalachian Brewery.

If you are into knives:

Country Knives - largest selection of edged implements I have seen. No bargains but impressive to see: https://www.countryknives.com/

American Military Edged Weaponry Museum. Not far from Country Knives, call first to see if they are open. https://www.discoverlancaster....ged-weaponry-museum/

Let me help you out. Which way did you come in?
