Today I heard a radio advertisement for the F-35 and the question popped into my mind of why spend the money on such an advertisement. If you are in the market for a fighter jet I can’t believe you’ve never heard of it or that a radio advertisement is going to make the decision makers have an epiphany and all of the sudden decide that they need some F-35s. Or am I giving the procurement process for new planes entirely too much credit and a radio ad over lunch really can impact the process?

The marketing/brand management people needed a line-item to justify their budget demands. There's zero reason to have a public advertisement for such platforms outside of industry media. Same applies to Northrop-Grumman when they ran their ad two Super Bowls ago for the upcoming B-21 Raider.

Was the radio ad on a nationally syndicated program, or a local ad? Do you have a local base of defense contractors?

I ask because we have one of the military service academies in the area, have a number of military bases in the area, and have a number of large nationally recognized defense contractors in the area. (Several smaller unknown ones also.)

The defense contractors are large contributors to the service academy sports teams and academy events, so on game day the sports stations authorized to broadcast the games play frequent defense contractor ads (Boeing, Lockheed-Martin, Raytheon, etc..), but once the event broadcast is finished, we don't normally hear many radio commercials from them.

This one sounds similar, but it’s nine years old.

How long of a runway do I need for an F-35?

Biden never said we couldn’t but F-35. Just F-15s and nukes to take on the government.

What was the MSRP on them? Any dealer markups to be aware of? I have always wanted my own fighter to make my commute easier. And it has the missiles and cannon I always wish I had on my truck. Win-win! Wink

You could always just pave a short strip and install a steam catapult. Probably need a license for that nuclear reactor though...Big Grin

You ever been on the subway in D.C.? The ads you see on the walls are waaaay different than what you see in most places. My guess is something similar is happening to you. You got geolocation or otherwise fit the same as targeting profile as a decision maker they are trying to show the ad to. You were basically collateral damage!

We do have some defense contractors around here and and we are outside of radio range of the Canucks but I don’t recall hearing any other Defense type ads on AM radio before. Usually it’s just windows and siding ads. I was hopeful I had just missed the first part of the ad and it was really that if I bought new windows and siding for my house they would throw in an F-35 for free.
