This morning I went over to the little railway we run about fifteen miles east to start getting ready for the upcoming Santa Specials this weekend. A couple of the guys already there met me with the news that one of our favourite smaller visitors, aged just five, had dropped dead at school - sudden infant death syndrome, or whatever it's called.

No warning, just here one second and not the next. His parents are devastated and had only just been over the previous week for a ride session.

Life just is not fair sometimes, and then, you die.

His name was Benedict - please think of him if you get a moment to spare.

Hug your kids, and then, hug 'em again. You never know how long they'll be here.

That is horrible, but not SIDS.

That only happens to children below the age of 1 year.

The key to enforcement is to punish the violator, not an inanimate object. The punishment of inanimate objects for the commission of a crime or carelessness is an affront to stupidity.

Yeah, not SIDS.

Nevertheless, that is heartbreaking and sad beyond words. This will be the second time today that my eyes have watered at the news of a young child's death.

That's terrible. I don't know them, yet this almost brings me to tears.
That should not happen to children.

I saw similar things several times when I worked in the hospital, and they always affected me deeply.

My prayers go to Benedict and his family.

Thank you all. I just didn't know what to call it, and nor, I guess, do the parents.

At least we knew when our son was going to die - the docs said five or six days, and that's what happened.

It is awful news.

I remember my late mother telling me about the sudden death of a similarly aged boy in our church when I was about 12. She told me of her sincere hope and belief that it is these particular souls who are selected to be angels. Since then I have noticed there are many kids who, at the age of five, are ethically and morally superior to just about all of us.

Prayers for young Benedict. I write this with a blurry screen.

I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all. -Ecclesiastes 9:11

...But the king shall rejoice in God; every one that sweareth by Him shall glory, but the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped. - Psalm 63:11 [excerpted]

Benedict made a good impression on our world in five years while others live long lives and never accomplish that, still very sad though. God's speed to little Benedict.
