Old receiver died. Bigger TV and my book shelf speakers no longer will fit beside TV. They are really to big / heavy to hang on the wall.

My old sub is not powered & needs a receiver to power it.

Not really a audiophile. Just need something that sounds decent during movies when we turn it up.

Any good recommendations out there in the $500 - $1K? range? Smart TV so really needs to be HDMI ARC compatible.

Okay looking on line. Are there any reasonably priced actually in stock any where? Jeez...

This is a good idea. What brand tv do you have? They usually make a matching sound bar/powered sub combo for 500ish dollars that matches the tv.

Sonus ARC is a spectacular unit for the money ~ $850 @ Costco but the sub is extra.
It sounds pretty great without a sub.
Great starting point ~ worth it, IMO.

I've got the Sonus Arc sound bar with sub. It's great. You can get the Sonus Beam (one step down but much less money and still great) and a the Sonus sub within your budget and you will love it.

Save your money and buy a Sonos ARC with Sub. I have changed my sound ecosystem over to Sonos and couldn't be more impressed. If you decide to just get the ARC for now, you'll love it, but you really do need the sub with it. The sub will take pressure off the sound bar to emit the lower frequencies and boost the bar's ability to push out all the other frequencies it excels at. So the pair really is worth it. I also added Sono's One rears and its such a simple and great sounding system. Also plays great music when entertaining.

Costco had some SONUS sound bar systems with subs on sale, that would be my choice, while a super sound system is great, the one we have works just fine.

Only thing about some of these. Is we have some other systems like one of the retro nintendo's and a Nintendo Wii my son & wife like to play.

So a good old school receiver allows me to flip between these sources. I also already have the back wall wired & mounts hung for rear channels already. So would be nice to utilize those.

You can do the same with a current sound bar.
You could also do the same with a current Smart TV.

If you just get a new AV receiver then it may or may not have power to the sub.
Most who go AVR route are a bit more serious as can be better for sure but a lot of variables and costs come into play as well for a more complicated installation.
Hence the recommendation for a decent soundbar.

I've always been impressed with Dayton Audio & Parts Express.

I'm a fan of 2 channel setups as I listen to more music and tv/movie dramas vs. action. I had surround sound setups but when the dust settles I prefer the simplicity and sound of a quality 2 channel setup.

When I moved to PR I had to leave all my Cambridge Audio equipment and Focal floor standing speakers and sub in storage. When I got here one of the first things I did was get a simple but solid setup. Went with a Yamaha 2 channel receiver and Polk floor speakers. Total was under $500 and for the price it performs almost as good as my other setup that cost upwards of $5,000. I don't even feel like a standalone sub is necessary as this setup has enough bass. However, if I wanted to shake the windows then it's a simple add on.

I've heard plenty of soundbars and while they're a significant upgrade from factory TV speakers they just don't do it for me. If space was an issue or if simple aesthetics for wall mounted setups are preferred over sound quality then so be it. They're also expensive and don't perform to the same level as properly enclosed speakers.

The Sonus ARC system is certainly an option for a good out-of-the-box HT setup, but it's well outside of the OP's stated price range.

The complete package of Sonus soundbar + subwoofer + 2-4 surround speakers is $2k+.

Plus tax and shipping. Plus speaker stands. Plus potential soundbar mount.

However, if you're willing to be patient, you could potentially piecemeal it, starting with the $900 soundbar alone, then later adding in the subwoofer and some surround speakers as money allows.

If you have a costco membership I would recommend a samsung or lg soundbar. Multiple options that fit your price range and you can also add two wireless rears to make a 5.1. I have the LG. No complaints and it meets your price range with additional speakers. Some folks have had issues with older generation LG products however. Ive heard only good about the samsung products.

Soundbars are terrible. Get a good Denon AVR with Audyssey Mult EQ XT and a set of 5.1 speakers.

The receiver will last a decade at least. My Denon AVR-X4300 is from 2016 and is running fine. Not much reason to upgrade.

Good speakers will last a lot longer. My mains are from 1998, I got the center and surrounds on ebay over the past 15 years. Sub is from 2010 or so. All Paradigm Reference V1 and V2 which are Canadian and very good. Modern materials - kevlar, polypropylene, etc. - don't degrade like old paper and foam speakers.

Well in their defense, there are some setups with a receiver for A Few Dollars More.

Seriously though, check out Elac. I bought a pair of their 6.5" 2-way bookshelf speakers with front firing bass port. These are outstanding and more than capable when connected to my Marantz 2252.

Pretty sure you can piece together a home theater setup if they don’t sell a "kit."
