I’ve had this little gadget for a few years. The clock automatically updates the time changes and keeps perfect time and it has always communicated with the outdoor unit. I noticed that the time did not change last week, and still has not. I changed batteries in the unit and the outdoor sensor, but no luck in several days, but today I took the batteries out, then put them back in and it started communicating with the outdoor unit while they were sitting next to each other, so I put the outdoor unit back outside and manually updated the clock. Next time I looked, it has lost communication with the outdoor unit. Do these things just die and quit working?

I should have put something in the photo for scale, but the main unit in the photo is 4 inches tall. It gives me outdoor temp, indoor temp and the time and that’s all I need/want.

Looks like it's cold as Hell at 8:55 in Oregon.

Or the temp transmitter died.

(I'm gong with my first guess though)

I have one that has rain gauge, anemometer and wind direction. It just quit working one day. The separate temperature and humidity gauge still works so i figured the transmitter died in the former.

It would cost more to replace than I paid for the kit so I dismantled it and am going to put together something else.

Apparently, dead transmitters are a common thing.

Both interference and batteries that aren’t fresh can cause problems between indoor and outdoor units. If you’re sure about the batteries, try cutting the distance between units in half for a few days and see if they can maintain sync. Might be interference if they can and you may need to relocate one of them to compensate.

I use these in my home, am on my second one now and they both had a thing where you need to put the batteries in either the base or outside unit first, I never remember which. If you put the batteries in the wrong unit first, they have communication problems.

Check doing it both ways.

Try this .....

Take batteries out of both units.

Wait two minutes.

Put fresh batteries in the outdoor transmitter first.

Next, place fresh batteries in the receiver.

Do not adjust time until outdoor temperature registers on receiver display.

Just did this procedure yesterday.

^^^^I can vouch for this. I have had several clocks and temp humidity units that this applies to.

Some units also need program set for daylight savings.

I change out units every four or five years.

Oregon Scientific? Yeah, they do.

I had a relatively expensive Oregon Scientific weather station with separate temp/humidity, wind direction/speed, rain gauge, and indoor temp/barometric pressure sensors. Worked fine for a few years. Then sensors started dying one-by-one. First the outdoor temp/humidity, Then the rain gauge. Oddly enough, the anemometer, which is what usually failed first on these kits, was the last one to fail. (I think the indoor temp/baro sensor still worked when I took it down.)

Oregon Scientific, La Crosse, AcuRight, and the other "affordable" weather stations are neither robust, nor particularly accurate. The Ambient Weather products are probably the best of the "affordable" weather stations. But, if you really want accuracy and reliability, you need to spend Real Money on something like a Davis Instruments weather station.

I suppose some day I'll break down and buy a Davis, but I really haven't wanted a weather station badly enough to invest the coin.

Wait two minutes or longer. And while the batteries are out press any buttons repeatedly to drain any voltage that may be lingering in caps.

There is a more or less similar unit, La Crosse brand, on the wall in our kitchen. Wireless outdoor temperature has always worked, is within one degree of a wired unit that is in a different room, but it has never been able to receive time updates from the Mother Ship (Boulder CO?).

My Casio watch will receive updates every night, when placed right next to the La Cross wall clock, so it appears that the problem is not the location within our house.

My Lacrosse wx station and Casio watch have been updating their clocks every night for years until recently only a few feet apart from each other. Now they’re both having trouble which I found could be solved by moving them to near a window on the west side of the house with a clear shot toward the WWVB transmitter in Fort Collins, CO. Haven’t heard they’ve decreased transmitter power, so maybe it’s related to RF propagation changes due to the solar sunspot cycle?

No idea, but that’s my theory and I’m sticking with it!

And your theory is correct.

Notice for March 9-April 9, 2021:

The WWVB broadcast system is being upgraded with new equipment to improve the reliability of the signal. In order to install this equipment, beginning on March 9, 2021 the WWVB signal may be operated on a single antenna at approximately 30 kW radiated power for periods up to several days in duration, and may have occasional outages. Periods of reduced power operation lasting longer than 30 minutes will be logged on the WWVB Antenna Configuration and Power web page, and any outage longer than five minutes' duration will be recorded on the WWVB Outage web page. Upgrades are expected to be complete by April 9, 2021.

Thanks, good to know. Sounds like I can move my wx display and watch back to where they belong by mid-April.

One alternative to consider is to buy a Arduino and make one yourself. They are super simple to program and the sensors are cheap.

Well I will be darned. Just tried that and it worked. I haven't been able to read an outside temperature in a year.

I tried that this morning. It seemed to work with the main unit and the sensor sitting next to each other. Temps disagreed by only 0.2 degrees. Left them sit next to each other for a couple of hours, then moved the sensor across the room. Still working. Another couple of hours I put the sensor outside on the front porch. Still working, so I put it back in it’s location it’s been in for years and it’s still working, so problem solved. Thank you for that. I’ll be writing those instructions down and putting them in the manual for the next time.

I have been looking at weather monitors and have several bookmarked. I am considering upgrading to something new, even tho I got the old one working, and one that I am looking at is the AcuRite Notos 00622 with Wind Speed, Temperature and Humidity It would be neat to have wind speed as we get some nasty storms here along the coast in the PNW. However, I see a lot of negative reviews on the outside sensor not lasting. Anyone here have any real experience with this model?
