Not that he has much of a chance, but it would be entertaining Republican Joe Arpaio, a close ally of President Trump and former sheriff known for his provocative approach to combatting illegal immigration, is running for Senate in Arizona. The 85-year-old Arpaio could shake up the late August Republican primary in a critical open-seat race to replace retiring Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz. Trump pardoned Arpaio last summer, sparing the former sheriff jail time after he was convicted of ignoring a federal court order in a racial-profiling case. The polarizing yet iconic former Maricopa County sheriff, beloved by many conservatives for his hawkish immigration policies, presents an alternative to state Sen. Kelli Ward and a potential obstacle to Rep. Martha McSally. She is expected to launch within days and is widely viewed as the Republicans’ strongest general election candidate. In a telephone interview with the Washington Examiner, Arpaio shrugged off concerns about his age, dismissed Republican insiders’ anxiety that his poor reputation with nonwhite voters would put the seat in play for the Democrats in the midterm, and discussed plans to work with Trump on behalf of Arizona. “I have a lot to offer. I’m a big supporter of President Trump,” Arpaio said. “I’m going to have to work hard; you don’t take anything for granted. But I would not being doing this if I thought that I could not win. I’m not here to get my name in the paper, I get that everyday, anyway.” http://www.foxnews.com/politic...nate-in-arizona.html

Lets see, he'd be 86 by the time he took office and it's a 6 year term, so he'd be 92 if he makes it. I know we've had people that have been that old serving in congress but this must be a new first for a freshman Senator should he win.

McSally is sharp. Legit Military experience. Legit political experience. Get her in the senate for a few years and she can be pres in 2024.

Stupid act. All Arpaio will end up accomplishing is to put the president into a difficult situation and, to be frank, most probably damage the chances of other, younger and much more qualified candidates. Silent

R's can't afford to lose another seat with nonsense like what happened in Alabama. Put up a solid, not-highly-controversial conservative, and take your win.

Sheriff Joe needs to stop. He was once a good man and then he let his ego get in the way and wanted to be a celebrity and it cost us (Maricopa County Taxpayers) millions. He made a fool of himself along the way. Hang it up old man, we don't need or want you in this race. Republicans need to hold this seat and your being in the race puts it in jeopardy. ____________________________ NRA Benefactor Life Member GOA Life Member Arizona Citizens Defense League Life Member

McSally - as outlined above - for one. The 2018 mid-terms are shaping up to be brutal. In my view the republican party needs candidates that have the best shot of winning the general election in states like Arizona so that party (and super pac) resources can be spent in those red-states with democratic senators (Testor of Montana for example) standing for reelection. An Arpaio win in the primary would probably mean a mark in the win column for the democrats; Arpaio lost the last election for the Sherriff of Maricopa county 44% to 55%; I'd call that a blowout. To be sure lots of Soros money seems to have been involved, and quite simply that is going to happen again; mud sticks to perceptions, not necessarily realities. For me, Sherriff Joe has done a great job over the years in courageously bringing up issues that needed exposure. However, I think his time in the arena as an elected official is over. Silent

As much as I love the Sheriff and what he stands for, I will support Mc Sally. Will be a huge improvement over Flake. Need McCain to step down too and get an appointment by the Governor. HK Ag

My thoughts as well. McLame should have retired long ago. He is a charter member of "The Swamp" and can't get over the fact that he is not, or was not, the prez. We have a similar situation developing in MN with Franken's seat coming up for special election. Michele-pray the gay away-Bachmann is thinking of running. She won't win statewide, and will kill the best chance we've had in decades for flipping the seat.
