The high desert and Eastern Sierra region of California. A good jumping-off point would be Bishop. Within a 150-mile radius are Death Valley (contains the lowest point in the US); Mt. Whitney (highest point in the continental US); Mammoth Lakes; Mono Lake; June Lake; the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest; Yosemite (summer only via Tioga Road). (This is not an all-inclusive list.)

From the Columbia River Gorge,
take US 101 down the Oregon coast, stop in places like Yachats, enjoy seafood and scenery.

Come down US 101 from Oregon, turn onto CA 1 at Laytonville where it joins 101, meander down the beautiful northern California coast to Mendocino, Gualala, Sea Ranch, Jenner to Guerneville. From there take River Road to Santa Rosa, cruise around Sonoma Valley wine country then over to Napa County for more wine and fantastic food. Maybe take in a race a Sonoma Raceway, or whatever it's called these days.

Custer State Park, SD. Lots to see and explore, both in and near the park. So much like Yellowstone, sans guisers. Night trip to Mt Rushmore.

Funny that you led off with the Columbia River Gorge....

About two years ago, I was planning on going down to Terlingua, Texas to check out the lay of the land. I was thinking I might buy some land down there and build an off-the-grid place to retire to. Well, my unit said "Hey, we need you to go to Astoria, Oregon instead."

Since I hate flying, I asked if I could take my leave in conjunction with the TDY. I'd just drive up from Texas to Oregon.

After leaving Terlingua, I passed through Monument Valley, Valley of the Gods, Moab, Capitol Reef, and of course, the Columbia River Gorge. I even got to check out Multnomah Falls. Took me two days.

That drive convinced me that there was still a ton left to see in the US, let alone the rest of the continent, and got me firmly on the path to getting an RV.

The Maine coast in September, Vermont during foliage season, and the area of Buffalo Wyoming. Crazy woman canyon, bighorns, roads where you have to slow down due to all the deer crossing [blew my mind].

You get to the Columbia River Gorge again come a little further east to Boardman, and I will buy the coffee/beer.

More California drives/destinations, in the northern part:
Coast redwoods along US 101. Redwood National Park lies between Crescent City and Eureka.
Routes 3, 96 and 299 are scenic, challenging but not excessively so to a RV.
Mount Shasta
Lassen Volcanic National Park
Lava Beds National Monument

Redding is probably the best "base camp" to explore this area.

And I wouldn't want to drive a behemoth RV in or around there.

Some of these places we're suggesting might be a little rough on a large RV's brakes.

You can sign up for packages on the city's website to be their mayor for a 1 hour term or 24 hour term. You receive mayor swag.

In the area is:
  • University of Michigan which has one of the best football stadiums in the country (which pains me to say). I've had fun every time I've gone to the Big House.
  • Michigan is one of the best states in terms of per capita golf courses, and unlike the south the variety of grass (e.g. Kentucky blue grass) used doesn't try to rip your iron out of your hand.
  • Actor Jeff Daniels started the Purple Rose Theater in nearby Chelsea, MI. I haven't been there in years, but the Common Grill is good.
