I have a decided to sell my beloved TRD Sport Tacoma and buy a monstrously huge SUV for our growing family.

In my dealings with Craigslist I have found it to be a great source for motorcycles as well as unsavory scammers. Obviously, I am quite reluctant to post my vehicle there. I'd like to avoid the BS that often accompanies CL. Don't get me wrong, Craigslist can be excellent. I have scored countless motorcycles and guitars from CL but it has its downsides.

How would you sell a six year old truck that is in decent shape and is worth a good amount of money?

Craigslist
Seriously it's the good and the bad. It's a pain in the ass, but it's about the best way.
If you put a for sale sign on it and park it in the same spot for more than 24 hours here you'll get a ticket.
You'll still have to do all of the leg work on researching the value, cleaning it up, pictures, and creating the ad.
But if you want top dollar then selling private party is the way and I know of no better.
Currently selling a vehicle that way today after 6 days of listing for just under asking price.

Cheers~

Do you want to get the most money for it, or the least amount of hassle? You can't have both.

Take it by Carmax and see what they would give you for it versus trade in or out right sale. Compare with KBB and local research to see what will be the most benificial to you as your time has value.

Must have auto trader type publications near you. Some might even be free advertising. Maybe for good exposure, Hemmings Motor News?

Oh and, you'd be surprised the sales on Ebay too.

186,000 miles per second.
It's the law.

I sold two high end cars and a motorcycle on CL. I had very firmly written ads and required proof of insurance and DL to even view the vehicles. I had the usual tire kickers via email and did not even reply to those. I had phone conversations with people that sounded legit, and met them in my bank's parking lot to inspect the cars. Zero problems.

Right, but tgatswgyafhmfi.

(The guy across the street will give you a few hundred more for it)

Seriously - every carmax I've ever driven past has a place across the street or a block down the road (as close as possible, in other words) that advertises they'll beat carmax's offer.

You get carmax's guaranteed offer and then take it straight to them for a few hundred more.

I predict that there will be many suggestions and statements about the law made here, and some of them will be spectacularly wrong. - jhe888

Sold a 2-3 on Cars.com the last couple of years. It's free up to 6 photos if I remember correctly. Got several 3rd party calls, but the individuals that called who were local always turned out to be serious buyers. You shouldn't have any problem selling a Tacoma on there as long as you price it accordingly. Depending on the year, the resale value may hurt you more than anything. If you're asking close to the price of a new one, I suspect most people would just drive on to a lot at that point.
