I always thought SOS was considered a cheap meal.
I haven't made in 15 years, I bought a jar of Armour dried beef, 2.25 oz for $4.69. That's almost 33 dollars a pound! Eek What the hell? I'll buy steak.

Might try this; look for it in the frozen section.

My preference is sausage gravy on biscuits.

That's probably even more expensive.

A local grocer had frozen Stouffer products on sale today four for $10. I grabbed two packs of the Creamed Chipped Beef. Usually it's my Saturday morning breakfast, with toast.

I think the regular price is $4.69 a package.

I buy a London broil cut, slice it thin, and thrown it in a dehydrator. Love SOS but the store-bought dried beef is so salty, I can't eat it. I can control the spices making it myself. Just remember to pull it out before it turns into jerky. (although that's pretty good too)

Not sure what's cheaper these days, the chipped beef or the hamburger. Roll Eyes

I was never in the military, but my grandpa used to make it when I was a kid and we'd eat it over homemade biscuits. It was fantastic. I hadn't thought about that stuff in years, and it's very incompatible with my diabetic diet now, but those were better times. Thanks for the memories! Smile

Imagine that. I'm just now sitting down to two slices of toast and some dried beef gravy. My wife loves it when I make it. I have never used the dried beef in the jar. Way to expensive. I use the Carl Buddig Dried Beef in the 2 OZ package. I use 6 at a time and they only cost about 89 cents each! We used to buy and eat the Stouffers Dried Beef Gravy but we think they changes the recipe. It's way too salty anymore.

She would make the chipped beef too, haven't had it since I was a kid, loved it

Never had the pleasure of having a mess cook that could cook, everything was bland at every duty station

Almost every morning while single and in the Army, I would get an omelet smothered in SOS (ground beef) for breakfast in the chow hall.

Last I ever had SOS was as a kid. Ours didn’t have any meat in it. My mom basically had mixed vegetables like the frozen kind you find in a bag at the store in some type of gravy over a piece of toast. My parents did not curse and we were not allowed to curse, but that was the only time I heard my mom curse was when she said that was what we were having for dinner…lol.

Stouffers isn't the best, but certainly convenient. Works in an omelet too (with plenty of cheese), but you have to have the homemade biscuits.

A few years ago, stopped at the Tune Inn in SE DC, ordered the "SoS," the server didn't miss a beat, wasn't the best either, but a hearty serving served over Texas toast. Hmmmm, may have to go back one of these days.
