ZSMICHAELDo police cruisers have data event recorders?
In light of the recent post concerning a motorcycle and a police cruiser, I am curious as to what data if any is recorded on an event recorder?

The dash cam generally will record speed and possibly even GPS position.

YooperSigsMost newer vehicles have had EDRs installed in them as part of the engine diagnostic system. They have been subpoenaed in the past by law enforcement agencies and I would not be surprised to see that practice increase.
You car can and does "spy" on you.

Yeah comforting thought. I now remember the subpoena on the recent casino bus accident requested the EDR from the bus as well as the video and EDR on the freight train. I am curious as to how detailed they are as to time of braking, brake pressure etc.

ChowserEvery car is different but most record the last few seconds or longer. It'll usually tell speed, gas pedal or brake pedal usage, seat belt usage, etc.

MooneyP226In heavy trucks, the new onboard log systems can do:
Gps, accurate enough to tell what highway lane the truck is in
Tachometer
Speedometer
What transmission gear is in use
Jake brake
Over rev
Braking severity
Braking events (even taps) per mile
Coolant temp
Coolant pressure
Exhaust temp
Oil temp
Oil pressure
Throttle position, current
Line graph of throttle position, including for how long
Engine hour meter moving
Engine hour meter idle
Engine hour meter PTO
Hydraulic brake pressure
Air brake pressure
Fuel temp
Fuel pressure
Fuel level
Ambient temperature
as well as some others. They can also read engine codes too.
With built in nav your car also knows where you have been, how often, at what speed and route, and much more.
No wonder they cost so much now, with all the time and money just for the electronics programming, huh?

gw3971Our cars record everything. Open doors, gps, siren, brake, seat belt, which lights were on, rifle and shotgun racks, and a crash sensor as well.

ffemt44I don't know about PD. Our FD now has dash camera activated when the brakes are released. It also records seatbelt useage, throttle position, and brake application.

guardianangel762Ours just has what Ford puts in as the diagnostic software.
We don't even have dash or body cameras
Our CAD software records location and speed about 1/2 the time when it works but for the most part nothing that is not stock in a 2013 and beyond vehicle from the factory.
Equipment varies greatly vehicle to vehicle in most departments so you cannot answer this question from one car to the next at the same department let alone all of them in 1 county or 1 state.
