Valdes got a taxpayer-financed ride to Springfield police headquarters Saturday night after allegedly jumping into an undercover officer's car while fleeing several other officers. Valdes, 25, pleaded not guilty Monday in Springfield District Court to resisting arrest, breaking and entering into a vehicle, and possession of crack cocaine with intent to distribute. The charges were filed after police attempted to pull over a pickup driven by Valdes late Saturday night on East Columbus Avenue, according to the arrest report. Valdes, who was wanted on two warrants, fled and eventually abandoned his vehicle before running towards Central Street; when an unmarked police cruiser pulled over to the curb, Valdes ran over and attempted to get in it before reconsidering, the report said. "Seeing I wasn't pulling away from the curb and other officers were closing in, he tried to run," Sgt. Christopher Hitas wrote in the report. He was arrested nearby after a struggle; a search turned up a plastic baggie with 14 rocks of crack cocaine in his pocket, the report said. Judge John Payne set bail at $500 and revoked Valdes' release in two open drug cases, effectively jailing him for 90 days. Default warrants in those cases triggered the police pursuit. | ||
