If you don't pay, they'll just put a lien on your property.
After 3 years they can sell it on the courthouse steps for the back taxes.

I didn't say I wasn't going to pay.

But why should we look at increasing taxes when we already have laws on the books and law breakers to collect from?

Low hanging fruit first. Liens on their property first.

^^^ At least you're in St. Charles County where they aren't as tax-happy as here. Smile

I have no problem with that.

Yep. Tax bills are going to be bigger. It will take a long time to recover from the economic damage caused by the shutdown. There will be fewer businesses and less sales tax revenue but instead of spending less money most local government entities will try to make up revenue short falls by sticking it to property owners.
And that may fall flat if foreclosures trend up significantly. As my grandfather used to tell us kids all the time, "you can't squeeze water from a rock". And in this case, you can't squeeze tax revenue out of people who are broke.

Utah health care workers who volunteered in NY may have to pay state income taxes
BY MCKENZIE STAUFFER
WEDNESDAY, MAY 6TH 2020

(KUTV) — Healthcare workers, including some from Utah, who traveled to New York to help fight the coronavirus pandemic will have to pay state taxes, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Tuesday.

"We're not in a position to provide any subsidies right now because we have a $13 billion deficit," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.

So there's a lot of good things I'd like to do, and if we get federal funding, we can do, but it would be irresponsible for me to sit here looking at a $13 billion deficit and say I'm gonna spend more money, when I can't even pay the essential services.

PIX 11 reports that even though the state government asked for thousands of people to come to New York form out of state, those workers will have to pay New York state taxes. This also includes taxes on income the workers may make from their home states that they’re paid while in New York.

Any out-of-state resident who came to New York to work on coronavirus relief is subject to the tax after 14 days, PIX 11 reports.

Cuomo said Tuesday that he needs help from Washington in order to cover budge deficits from COVID-19 and subsidize state income tax for the out-of-state essential workers.

"If we don't get more money from Washington, we can't fund schools, right, so at the rate we want to fund them. We are in dire financial need," he said.

Teams from Intermountain Healthcare spent two weeks in New York helping health care workers on the front lines of coronavirus.

Each team consisted of 50 caregivers, including: physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, respiratory therapists and other healthcare professionals.

Nice, play on the workers income to blackmail Trump... If I were there helping I'd be leaving NY today and tell them to F-themselves...

The demoKKKrat-controlled states that are planning on remaining locked down for another month or 6 weeks are not doing it because of public health concerns:

1. They think this will ruin the President's re-election
2. They're hoping that the feds will bail them out after July (when extra fed unemployment payments end)

These were PAID volunteers. The Red Sox have to pay income tax when they play in New York. I do not understand why this is an issue. Petition the Governor or Legislature if you want a change.

Amazing plan. Beg for out of state workers to come save your state, then use them to backfill the results of your bad decisions. When that won't fill the pot, blame Washington.

So they were paid in their home state? They went to New York to help them out in their time of need.

Are they going to be taxed based on their home state’s tax rate which may be lower or non existent? No, it will be based on New York’s tax rate. So will their home state be short because of New York?

I have a friend who went to NY as a nurse. For what they're paying her she can pay the taxes. It is an absurd amount (which she is still there collecting).

As I noted earlier, Major League baseball players pay tax in every state in which they play. CPAs do all the figuring as states have reciprocity agreements on these issues. Someone is trying to make a politcal issue out of taxes.

MLB players? We're not talking about professional baseball players. I don't work a single day in my home state of Utah, but I pay all of my state income taxes in Utah. I'm no accountant so I'm just going off of personal experience. I suppose New York may do it differently.

For anyone who works with numbers day in and day out, the taxes on the income these out-of-state workers would accrue is utterly insignificant to the actual tax collections of New York. This is not about the taxes these people will owe, this is 100% about squeezing Washington for more cash and daring them not to pay it. Its typical disgusting politics at the expense of ever person who works and pays taxes. Heads on pikes would be a nice response.

Unless states have an agreement of some sort, you pay state income taxes on wages to your state of residence and to the state you earned the wages in. This is the way it has been for at least 30 years (I'm sure it's decades more, but I started doing taxes 30 years ago). Some states will give a credit for taxes paid in another state.

The rules are different if you move from one state to another. You pay each state taxes based on the income you earned while residing in each state.

When my daughter was in college at the University of Tulsa, she had a part time job. She also came back to Missouri for the summer and worked an internship in Wood River, Illinois.
She had to file State income tax returns in Oklahoma, Missouri, and Illinois. It can be quite complicated.
