Very true! Have heard some of it from Afcrapistan. Impressive does not quite convey the actuality.
And, IIRC, some dunce wants to do away with them. I suspect a lot of special forces type are not on board with that idea. In fact, I know several.

Might be bad memory, but I seem to recall that the army said they wanted them, which caused the AF to decide to keep them.

Why don’t you think anyone could survive the first burst?
You’d be surprised what folks can crawl away from. We hit everything twice because years of experience have taught us to hit everything twice. Sometimes thrice!

Just because it was newly released this week and quite befitting to the thread. I have no affiliation other than as a buyer of awesome shirts.

If you're going to use an A-10 to kill an unarmored anything, it's probably worth killing it twice. Not like the pilot can hop out & check to make sure the 1st burst did the job.
It's apparent there was a particular High Value Target in that vehicle. Pilot's orders are to kill the people in the SUV, not just to shoot up his ride. Second pass affirms "target killed with high degree of confidence".

Years ago I watched an A-10 doing mock strafing runs at a Homestead AFB airshow. The maneuverability and precision of its control especially given the low altitude it was performing at was truly awe inspiring!
I can't find it right now, but I read recently online that they are actually going to be investing some money in updating some of the A-10s they were planning to permanently retire so it looks like it still has a useful life ahead of it. Makes perfect sense to me. It is such a great airframe and gun combination that some 21st century updates is all it really needs.
I'm a fan of drones for certain applications and missions, but nothing beats the situational awareness, determination, and adaptability of a person sitting in the pilot seat of one of these or any military aircraft for that matter.

Isn’t it an airborn double tap?
Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.
When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson
"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

Well, at 70 rounds a second, it's more like a airborne 140 tap. This message has been edited. Last edited by: PeteF,

Thanks for the post!
This is one of my favorite aircraft!!
We had a flyover at one of the penn state games and I walked to the upper deck just to get a better view. It passed over then maneuvered a bit over the tailgating lots before landing. It was amazing to watch the maneuverability and quietness of those planes. Made my day and year to see it in person!!

If you look closely at the 16+ second mark, you will see flames inside the vehicle.
Not that they shouldn't have fired again. I wouldn't dream of arguing with those guys!

US Air Force philosophy: Before War - We don't need old, slow, ugly aircraft for ground support, sleek fast fighters can do that better and quicker
During War - The sleek fast fighters are too quick, not enough time on target, they're here and gone too fast for accurate engagement, none of them will fly low as AAA could take them down. We need an ugly, slow, aerial tank that can loiter and support troops
