Was up enjoying some insomnia last night and watched an info mercial on an air fryer.

How do these perform? Is it actually crispy and good?

There have been several threads on them. It is a self contained convection oven, it does not fry anything. Much healthier way to cook but you won't be putting in fresh battered foods and pulling out golden brown fried entrees.

We just bought one. A Nuwave Airfryer. Needs a special spray to prep the cooking basket. Noisy little sucker and according to recipe potatoes need to be boiled prior to cooking.

So far, IMO, meh.

Pizza rolls in the oven require 425 or 450 degrees and 11-13 minutes.

Warm the air fryer to 383 degrees and cook for 6 mins.

Oven results.

So, lower heat and including warm up of 2 mins, less time with the same results.

I use mine all the time.
It is nice to not have to heat up the whole house to use the oven.
Made chicken breast tonight for dinner, they cane out with a nice roasted outer finish and moist on the inside.
We make anything we can in it that we would make in the oven as long as it fits.
I started using mine to make wasabi peas using chick peas.
Hamburgers and meatloaf come out great.
The one thing we have learned is that some foods we cook in it have to be flipped half way through cooking.

I purchased a 16 qt model from Amazon (largest size I could find at the time). Worked great but a word of caution depending on the size of your family. I found it difficult, for example, to fit enough chicken in it to cook at the same time for our family of 5 (3 teenage boys can eat a lot of chicken). Wasn’t practical to cook one batch and then another so I gave it to my parents. No complaints on the flavor and juiciness of foods prepared with it.

I have the Philips air fryer. I use it all the time and prefer these wings to fried.

So how long would it take to cook 4 chicken breasts?
A bag of frozen fries or tater tots???

Would 2 small ones be better than a big one?

IMHO - even the big ones aren't big enough to cook food for more than 1 or 2 people. They work well for bagged 'fryer' type food, but don't for raw stuff. I tried to do battered morels (using an 'air fryer' recipe) and it failed horribly. It takes nearly as long as baking in the oven.

Last night I cooked 2 large boneless chicken breast. They both just fit.
I cooked one side for about 20 minutes then flipped them and cooked for an additional 20 minutes.
Then I checked with a cooking thermometer.

I'll be THAT guy.

We got one, used it to cook wings a couple times, and realized that it took longer than the directions said and wasn't all that special

Figured out that our oven has a "Speed Bake" setting that did the same thing, and the temps could get higher with more even cooking. Tossed the air fryer into the garage sale box, and never looked back.

For the most part I find it might not be much quicker I just do not have to heat up the whole house using the oven.
I do like the way food comes out. I placed 2 big chicken breast in the air fryer with just seasoning on them and when they were done they had a nice seared outer crust and were still moist on the inside.

Our little Breville is a sweet little machine. It gets used much more than the full size oven because it heats up so much faster. Cool time is the same just about a quarter of the time to heat to temperature.
It does not heat up the whole house but neither does our full size oven.

We picked one up at Costco. We found it wouldn’t hold enough for our needs plus it took nearly as long as our convection oven. For chicken breasts, we use an infrared cooker that does them perfectly in 14 minutes.

The air fryer went back to Costco.

40 minutes to cook a chicken breast? No thanks, I'll grill mine in half the time. Quarter of the time if I smash it flat with a meat hammer. I've been doing that recently for fast chicken. Smash it all to the same thickness <1" and grill at higher temp and it only takes ten minutes on grill and comes out very tender because the fat end now cooks at same rate as smaller end. Doesn't look as pretty busy it's freaking delicious. Perfect for cutting up in salad, fajitas, burritos, I even did it that way then cut up for some jambalaya last night, cooked fast and yummy. We ate several pieces before it went into dish.
