We switched auto and homeowners insurance to Safeco has Allstate was getting expensive and when my agent retired they assigned us to another agent in another town. An insurance agent Ive known since high school got us on Safeco. My daughter bought a car from me and we went through Progressive for her car. A month later the agent calls and says that Safeco is demanding that my daughters car be included in our policy since she lives with us. Some sort of legal liability issue. We had a few days to provide her drivers license and put her on the policy. Two days later we get a letter saying our policy is terminated due to none compliance with their request. The agent provided the information requested and and we were reinstated. Unfortunatley our auto policy doubled in price and my daughters portion was way higher than Progressive. Been back and forth with the agent about why my wife’s vehicle and mine premiums went up and the monthly payment almost doubled. How does Safeco rate in handling claims? I’m concerned since they have trouble with policy’s. We got a quote from AAA on auto and home. Anyone have experience with AAA on insurance? I know it’s road side assistance it can be hit or miss so I am concerned about their response especially with the home.

Your story sounds EXACTLY like mine. My daughter graduated high school, got a job, and we gave her a car and put it in her name. She purchased insurance for her car herself. A short while later we are told by Geico that we need to add her to our policy since she lives with us. I switched to Progressive and a month later Progressive tells us the same thing. In both cases our rates nearly doubled. I got a quote from AAA and been with them for almost three years and not had a problem at all. My daughter still lives with us and she isn't on our policy. I've only had two glass claims with AAA but they've been easy to deal with. The only issue is my wife and I had to keep an app on our cell phones for the first year to monitor our driving. This influences the rate you pay moving forward but you do get a discount for participating. ____________________________ NRA Benefactor Life Member GOA Life Member Arizona Citizens Defense League Life Member

Not sure why safeco would demand your daughters car be on their policy, unless the car is in your name, titled at your address, and she lives there, however it's their rules. Perhaps they require you to list your daughter on their policy as a driver since she lives in the house, and they may choose to rate the most expensive car with her as the driver since she could drive that car. Not sure where you live, so no link, but contact your state department of insurance, consumer division and discuss it with them if you feel it's problematic. Get quotes from other agents and/or check Geico.com for you and your wife, and put your daughter back on her Progressive policy. If the rates are better, drop Safeco.

In my experience, if you have a young driver living with you, the insurance company takes the view that they *could be* driving your vehicles in preference to their own, or if theirs is off the road for some reason, therefore they need to be included on your policy.

I had Safeco for a while, think possibly even a claim and we had zero issues. However, I rebid my insurance thru an insurance broker every year to get the best deal. I got know idea where your at but you may look into a regional insurance company if available so long as you are not in a disaster prone state. I use a regional insurance company and have since 2003. After I got fed up with more than one lying insurance broker. Don't have a need for an do all insurance broker and their cut. I've had good luck with my regional insurance company and have priced insurance 3 times since I went with a regional insurance company none of the national insurance companys are even close to what I pay.

We had to list my brother in law on our auto policy during the time he lived with us. He wasn't a covered driver, but was named on the policy. The Enemy's gate is down.

One of the first questions the AAA rep asked was if we all had cell phones to install their app on. I asked him to email us the quote because the figures over the phone looked promising. When we finally got the email the numbers were quite different from those he gave us over the phone. We questioned him about it and he hem hawed. AAA wont be getting our business.

I hate to say it, but it sounds like your new agent doesn't really know what he's doing. Every insurance company wants to know about about all potential drivers that live in the household. It is a question on almost every application. It goes towards rating - even if they have their own cars/policies/etc. Failure to disclose (especially when it comes to kids or household members with bad driving records) can be considered material misrepresentation - which is grounds for the policy to be rescinded. Since your daughter has her own Progressive policy (assuming she lives in your house), I would list her on your policy, then excluded her as a driver on policy. That should drop your rates. However, it means that if she ever does drive one of your cars and is in an accident - there's NO coverage. Zip, zero, zilch, nada, none.

It doesn't work like that. That's exactly what I tried to do with Progressive and took it as high as I could get by asking for a supervisor. I had her added to my policy and had her excluded and my rates remained extremely high, almost double. I asked them "so you're charging me extra to not insure my daughter?" and they said "yes sir, your risk level is higher". They could not provide an answer when I asked "if she's excluded and you're not going to cover anything involving her how is my risk higher?". ____________________________ NRA Benefactor Life Member GOA Life Member Arizona Citizens Defense League Life Member

I did similar action with my son, who is a freshman at college now and keeps car with him. We use Erie Insurance for all policies. I gifted him my oldest car and re-titled it in his name (still my address). We split him to his own policy. My rates dropped by $1000. He still lives with us and is my dependent. I've had no issues nor requests from Erie since the split. I'm in PA, and don't know where you are. Erie only serves a few states. P229R - 9mm Kahr PM9

Ask your friends and coworkers for recommendations for a good local independent insurance broker, then buy based on the numbers and read the terms. I've had almost no claims after several decades of driving and home ownership. I've had separate companies and bundled the coverage for a discount at times. I've never had an at fault accident or homeowners claim due to anything we did. I had one claim attempt was due to a lightning strike and car was an under-insured driver. In other words, I've paid tens of thousands over that time for coverage, but no outlay on their part. Up until recently I've used the more highly rated companies thinking if I did need them, they'd be there. That's a totally random non-fact from my experience. The one time when I tried to get them involved on the lightning strike and one time an under-insured driver hit me, I got terrible service, and that was from the highly rated ones. Now I buy mostly on price. ___________________________ Avoid buying ChiCom/CCP products whenever possible.

Who is the car registered to? If it's registered to your daughter it shouldn't be on your policy whatsoever. This is a new one for me.

Yes, actually, it does. Most of the more reputable regional and national carriers do it all day long, and understand why it's done. The problem was Progressive. They are barely one step above non-standard/assigned risk carriers. As 220-9er said - look for a reputable, local independent insurance agent. They will find the best carrier for you outside of the direct-write carriers (Snake Farm, ALFA, etc.)
