Clearing customs at IAH. Fast? Slow? It depends? Login/Join

My daughter is flying back from Belize on Sat Nov 4 via United. She lands at IAH at 6:10PM, her connecting flight to KC (United RJ commuter) leaves at 7:45PM. That seems tight, but what do I know.

Well, I do know she does not have Global Entry, but IAH has something called "Automated Passport Control" (first I've heard of it) that should save her some time.

With 1:35 between flights, is it likely she'll make the connection?

I've not done that in several years, but when we did the San Diego to IAH to Paris and reverse, I don't think you could make it that fast.

For one thing, to travel the distance between arrival, retrieve your bags, customs clearance, recheck your bags and travel to the departure gate is very long, and that's if you keep moving with no delay. You want to be at the departure gate 10 minutes or more before the departure time. Pretty close!

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

I did Canada to IAH last spring and it was easy peasy.

I forget my connection time but I think 1+35 is plenty for her to make it.

I just did Rome to JFK tonight and cleared customs on a busy Sunday night in 20 minutes in NYC. The automated entry really speeds the process.

A hell of a lot faster than MIA, but not as fast as Global Entry. A little late for that, though.

My experience is customs is it all depends on what lands ahead of you. Get a bunch of international flights coming in just before yours and you have to wait.

I haven't cleared customs at IAH but the last few times at BWI and IAD have been very short lines. I have Global Entry and last time I came into IAD I was trailing with someone that didn't. We cleared the lines about the same time.

I am told the mobile passport control app (phone app) can speed it up a lot.
Almost as good as Global Entry

When I come in the country through IAH I go through global entry but do notice that the regular wait lines are usually backed up earlier in the day. The big Euro arrivals come in earlier than your daughter's flight. The damn TSA check lines at IAH to get back into the domestic terminal can be longer than the passport lines. She should be alright but it will be close. Check to see if there is another later flight to KC just in case and be aware of it.

Nope, it's the last United flight to MCI, next one is 8:40AM. My daughter travels around the world, some for work, some for fun (like this trip), she can easily do a night in a hotel.

Immigration and Customs were not the problem for me at IAH, last time I flew through there. The reentry security screening after customs and before entering the sterile side for domestic flights took almost an hour. I am GE and there is no premier lane, or pre-check to get through. At that time, there were no nude-o-scope scanners, so with my metal hips, I had to have the full monty pat-down too. Arrgh! I think she will be hard pressed to get to a domestic connection in that time. Good luck.

Just did it an hour ago, wasn't bad, but she is cutting it close. Depending on where your gate is, I had a very long walk, then customs which was about 15 minutes, but then you have to get your baggage and go through all that. She can do it but tell her not to lollygag

I often will go out the exit after clearing customs so that I can go through the normal domestic TSA check point rather than go through the international arrivals TSA entry check point. Like you said most international arrival TSA entry check points do not have TSA pre lines. Much quicker and easier.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual."
