This Rösle is the best manual hand-held can opener available:

www.amazon.com/dp/B001CJQ73W/r..._api_i_w.TcDbZKAKC9V

I’ve had mine for over two years. I’ve never cleaned it, but it still looks, and works, like new, despite the fact that I use it frequently. No sharp edge on the can. At $34 it’s expensive, but I’m willing to pay a premium price for a tool of superior design, construction, and material that I use often. Like my SIG P226 X5. Smile

Serious about crackers.

About 2 years ago, I bought what was billed as an original swing away can opener to replace the one we got when we were married many years ago. Yes, the design was exactly the same, and it worked the same “if” you could get it to sit right on the can and clamp down. The hinge and it’s rivet allowed some additional slop in it, making it worse than the original. It was bought from Amazon, and reportedly Not a knock of Chinese piece of shit, but that’s certainly how it performed. I sent it back and still have the original. I’m not sure if Swing-A-Way has changed, or I got a crap one, but I’d be wary of anyone encouraging you to buy a new product because the one they bought 20 years ago is still awesome... you need to know what’s available today that’s awesome.

In my kitchen drawer there's one of these:

It's from Ecko, I've had it darn near forever, and it always works. Cool

I used to have another one like it... so old it had "39¢" stamped in the handle.

Same here. I looked at a whole lot of reviews and this one consistently ranked at or near the top.

Cost around $12

OXO for bang for the buck. My Mon rocked a Swing A way Wall mount model. She cranked it like a Gatling Gun!
Sadly, S-A-W are no longer made in the US. If you want to go with a US made opener: EZ Duz It.

Went through this a few months ago, as the old one wore out.

Bought this one and it works great. No sharp edges.

You beat me to it. Wasn't a cook but also used them when I was in the Air Force. Amazon carries the P38 can opener.

Swing A Way never fails. Cheap, too. I had one that was 20 or 30 years old until the floods from Harvey.

I got so sick of crappy can openers that I bought a kitchenaid can opener. Was $20, but has outlasted the 4 $5 ones I had before it.

EZ-DUZ-IT off Amazon. USA made, old school design. Got it after I hit a run of bad OXO's from WalMart. I usually don't have any argument with OXO products, but I bought and returned three in very quick succession.

This. We had some expensive opener that was a piece of junk. It was a gift and so the Mrs. and I suffered with it for years. I finally had enough, tossed it in the trash and ordered this one.

My wife has one made by Cutco that works really well, and it just feels like a quality tool.

Me too!
Mom had a wall mounted Swing-A-Way so when I got married in 1973 I bought my own. Moved and always took it with me until 2015 when I left it behind, still functioning perfectly, but loosing some of the chrome plating and paint. Loved it, with it screwed to the wall over the oven, just under the vent hood, you never had to look for it!

Bought a new one in 2015 for the new to us house, looks identical to the old one but is crap, Doesn't work anywhere near as good as the 42 year old one did. Feels loose with poor fitting parts that sometimes runs off the rim of the can or just won't cut through the lid, just creases it.

Looks like this one, was supposed to be the original...

don't know the brand name of the one a friend told me about might be that OX? one or such or others already mentioned.. but these are great.... they actually cut/take the lid off the can and leave a smooth edge...... you would swear as you use the tool it is not doing anything... then 'pop' the lid can be taken off... for those who are really into recycling / reusing... because the open end of the can is smooth you can then safely use the can for storage or if society collapses as a drinking cup.
