Had to kill a Black Angus bull that got out of the pasture and got hit by an F150 doing 60 mph on a gravel road in the dark of night.

The truck was destroyed by the impact and the bull had a broken pelvis and back legs.

They are not easy to euthanize when they're moving around.

There's usually a single six in my vehicle. This, or my carry .38 will suffice around here. Also, a tire tool or Cold Steel shovel will likely be available. I live in a pretty rural area.

A friend of mine saw a severely injured raccoon that had somehow dragged itself to the shoulder. He stopped, but all he had to kill it with was a hammer. He was proceeding to do so and looked up to see a busload of horrified school children driving by.

deer jumped in front of me (literally) back in November,
the Civic I was driving booted it across the road, looked like a rag doll being tossed,

I figured it was dead, and I stopped to make the call to the police (for insurance) and the damn thing sat up, looked around as was able to move up out of the ditch, but not much farther,

cars passing, slowing down, snapping pics, and one guy yells over to me and asks if I knew there was a deer on the side of the road,,,

yup,, I do, I just hit it, (lightbulb may have flickered ,,, ) they then drove off,

police showed and said it was good I did not shoot it, bad juju in the county, I would have likely been cited, and I directed/stopped traffic so he could put it down

FWIW, a small deer, maybe 70 lbs took 3 rounds to the chest and finally passed

Horrified school children war story:
A deputy responded to an elementary school to check on a report of a sick Raccoon wandering the school grounds. Raccoons suffer from Mange, Distemper and even Rabies so these calls were common in my area. The arrival of the marked unit in the parking lot was seen by all the kids were who already watching the Raccoon stroll along a sidewalk outside the classroom windows.
Deputy unlimbered a Benelli shotgun and doubled tapped Mr. Fuzzy into several gooey chunks. In full view of the horrified school children!
Our hero was rewarded for his efforts with a weeks unpaid vacation. This event falls in the category of "theres a time and place for everything" and that wasnt it.

Yea that's a classic turtle crossing the road story. Anyone who lives in the south or near water or swamp eventually tries to "help" a snapper cross the road. Those guys show no appreciation whatsoever. The large ones are very interesting creatures. I liken it to looking at a dinosoar in the eye.

Helped a gopher tortoise cross a highway in Florida. He wasn’t happy about it, but I got him across without losing a finger, so it worked out.

Never have had to put down a critter on the road, thankfully.

I hit a deer 4 weeks ago. A 7,000 pound truck doing 85ish MPH sent that deer spinning like a top into the median.

I was in the right hand lane. It probably got flung a good 25ft. Luckily it was a real small deer.

The truck was drivable again once the body shop pulled the bumper out of the driver side tire. We are just waiting on parts now. But my poor truck looks like he had a stroke....

There is an unfortunate policy in Wyoming. You can be charged with poaching if you put an injured deer or antelope out of its misery after one is hit on the highway. You are supposed to contact Game and Fish. They will send someone to dispatch the animal. Hours later if at all.

Recently, the legislature passed a law that allows you to salvage roadkill for personal use. Not sure how the two coincide.

I would probably break the law and shoot an animal in distress. Wait, did I say that on a public forum? Apparently. So arrest me.

Years ago when working the street after having to shoot a couple dogs hit by cars with my revolver I started carrying a .22 pistol in my bag for dispatching severely injured animals. I was concerned with ricochets off the pavement with my service guns. Turns out I never needed to use the .22. I have had to euthanize deer and cats and horses out here on the ranch since retiring. As much as 50 years since I am still haunted by the stares of those animals as I ended their suffering.

First problem was shooting it in the chest. Head shots are much more effective.

I came across an injured deer (several years ago) in our neighborhood. Whoever hit it, just kept going.

I was debating how to deal with it, when the animal control warden drove up. I asked her what we should do about it. She said we should put it out of its misery (which I already knew). When I asked her how we should do that, she said she had no means to do it, and asked me if I had the means. I had a holstered pistol but was not sure about using it with the warden present. I indicated to her that I could shoot it but was not sure about what her job required her to do. She said, "I will plug my ears!"

So, I ended its suffering. Then asked her "now what do we do with it?"

Her response was that the best thing would be to eat it!, got in her truck and drove off laughing. It was really tender.

.

Local LEO received a call landowner had live trapped a skunk. Upon his response, he found the landowner had used a live trap. No you have a pissed off skunk in a live trap and the homeowner and the local Leo have no clue what to do. Somehow the idea to drench the trap in a flammable liquid and set on fire won out over the multiple options contemplated. I seem to recall a garden hose was prepared to be on the safe side. It wasn’t ough. Upon ignition, The skunk broke free from the trap and headed for his homestead. Which happened to be under the homestead of the homeowner. As the skunk aflame charged for his patch, the local Leo,and the erstwhile firefighter/homeowner pursued him with the garden hose. Alas their efforts were fruitless and the local fire brigade was then called. The local spca slapped both the homeowner and Leo with animal cruelty citations and the homeowner also had the issue of explaining to his insurance how he managed to set fire to his abode. The Officer took a couple of unpaid days off as well. Moral of,the story. I am glad it wasn’t me.
