Ceiling fans
Since they are all made in China now. What is a good reliable brand of ceiling fans?

All of mine are original to the house and still work great, they are just outdated and I may replace them if I can find a durable brand.

Hunter was always good but it's been years since I bought one.

Click the "for home" link. I've put several of these fans in for clients, everyone loves them.

I learned a lot and bought one from here: https://www.hansenwholesale.com/ceiling-fans

Functionally, I was leaning toward a Fanimation but was overruled into an Emerson for cosmetic reasons by my wife.

I looked at the Big Ass fans - I wanted one and they sound good but out of my budget. ($400 vs $1700+)

Bigass are great. They also make a really bright garage light.

Five 22-year old Hunter fans in our house are all still working fine. You’re supposed to check and add oil to the Hunter Original fan every few years, but I’ve only done that once so far. And if you want a bright Led light, try the 10K lumen GT-lite corn light Menards sells (uses 100W).

We’ve owned two Casablanca ceiling fans for 30 years without any trouble. I believe Casablanca is a line owned by Hunter.

Hunter Originals have always been top of the line. They're not cheap but built like tanks...cast iron, motor shaft is submerged in an oil reservoir, etc. These are the fans that made ceiling fans a household furnishing.

They're still being manufactured and are available through the big box stores although they don't usually keep them in stock...too expensive therefore slow movers not worth keeping in inventory. I think they went to an electrically reversible motor quite a while back as opposed to mechanically reversing the blade pitch/air flow direction.

Have the same Casablanca in my house for 35 years, did need to rebuild the motor once 20 years ago and it needs it again now (makes noise, goes slow).
All normal considering it runs 24/7 and fixable.

We have had Minka Air fans in our last two three houses (one a rental). In both cases we went not to a big box store but a local fans-only store to check out their selection.

There are certain features we were looking for other than esthetics and price:
1. DC motor - no buzz, much quieter
2. LED light
3. Remote control
4. Right size for the room size
5. Right size down-rod for ceiling height (better not up against ceiling, but don't want to hit fan if you raise your arms to take off t-shirt)

The Minka Aire fans have run from $250-350. More expensive than the big box fans, less expensive than Big Ass fans.

We got very good advice from our fan stores (you might say we're fans), and prices were similar to Amazon's.

The last four fans we have bought were Minka Aire Simple models with lights (you can buy without lights); we're very happy with them, but they are simple; if you want something showier there are lots available, not just from Minka Aire.

Installation is fussy but not bad.

Ive installed dozens and dozens of Hunter fans and never had a problem. They are also better balanced from the factory than other brands.

I installed 4 Hunter's in Oct. 2015. I know that's not long but they are fine.

One thing to check is what light bulbs they take (E12 cadelabra base vs. E26 standard medium base).

The choices in candelabra base bulbs are far more limited.

I have Hunters in every room that's big enough for a fan. They are all pushing 30 now. Never a problem. I don't use A/C so they get heavy usage.

Yeah but if you have a Hunter, when people ask you say, "its a hunter" but if you get a BAF, you can say "its a Big Ass Fan!"

Hunter is what I have always bought and all have worked great. Last set I bought was one for every room in my new house I bought 18 years ago and they have worked flawlessly for all those years.....knock on wood.

Installed a lot of Hunters back in the day. 70s and 80s.
Do they still make them with an actual oil cup that you filled with a provided tube of oil after hanging? You could check the oil in them with a dipstick made out of a bent pipe cleaner or similar.

Endeavor to persevere.

Master Electrician who has installed hundreds of not thousands of fans. Did four just today. I use MinkaAir in my house. They have a selection from economy to fancy ass. Every one I've seen has been just slightly to way better than competition in same price/quality at box store.

I have the Artemis in my living room and an El cheapo in the bedroom. Remote or receiver died during storms last week, which sucks. Crapshoot on which failed. Bought the wall transmitter, hope I guessed right, if not another $30 for receiver. Remote dying is not a knock on company that was power surge.

The ones I installed today were LED Dyno models. While it had pretty cheap feeling parts, especially the screws. Be careful not to crossthread or strip. They went together easily and had no wobbles and decent sound, not silent, but quiet.
