What god awful people. REALLY?

TOMPKINSVILLE, Staten Island — Morgie, the newest resident of a Tompkinsville community, is a 12-year-old chestnut mare beloved by nearly all of her neigh-bors.

Morgie arrived just six weeks ago when Abdul Elenani and his wife bought their home on a dead-end block and discovered that there is no city law prohibiting horses as pets.

“It’s a passion of mine, a hobby, it relaxes me,” Abdul Elenani, Morgie’s owner, told WPIX. “When I come home after a tough day at work at coffee shops, Cocoa Grinder, I put the hay out for her to eat."

The couple spent close to $5,000 building a stable in their driveway and now try to ride their horse at least every few days.

The only disappointment so far was when Abdul rode Morgie to the drive-through Dunkin’ Donuts; he and the horse he came in on were refused service.

“Medium ice coffee, milk and sugar. Thank you, I’m serious. Hey very serious,” Abdul can be heard saying video of the attempted purchase.

In this neighborhood Morgie already has a colt following.

“She’s a real sweetheart,” Ted Hyde, a neighbor, told WPIX. “She’s well cared for. She’s loved. She’s an asset to the neighborhood."

WPIX found there is only one nay-sayer on the block, Morgie’s closest next door neighbor.

“It’s six feet away from my kitchen window, unhappy neighbor Steve Coyne said. “It smells. The flies and mosquitoes are crazy. It whinnies all night long. It’s a nuisance."

The city has received three complaints, but article 161 of the city health code says as long as a horse is used for recreational, non commercial purposes, it’s all OK.

The Elenanis also had a goat, which was against the law. It left the premises Thursday.

“I spoke to a lawyer who says even if it’s legal, you can sure them, but it will be costly,” Coyne, the nay-saying neighbor, said

But for now, it’s just unbridled passion between Morgie and Abdul, the newest residents of Pommer Avenue.

So much laws in NY and CA, i am surprised people are allowed to have horse pets.

I say good on them. If they have a horse as a pet and are taking cars of it, great.

I also think they're rather stupid for spending their money that way but then again, it's their $$.

One day I'm working in north St. Louis City, one of the murder capitals of the US. I am stopped at a red light talking to my employee in the passenger seat when about 6 horses go galloping by.

Black guys, in full cowboy garb, in the middle of gang land, riding their horses up the street. I thought I might be hallucinating. The guy next to me saw the same thing though, so it had to be real.

I text one of my cop buddies who works in the area and he confirms it's legit. These guys keep their horses at home in the city, ride them around on the streets, and go to one of the parks to do whatever it is cowboys do on horses. I'm in that area several times a month but have only seen the horse gang that one time.

Heck, we used to ride our nags down to a local pizza restaurant for morning coffee. The owner built a hitching post out front for us. Said it was good for business. Tourists loved it.

I've owned horses continuously for 50 years. You have to put a lot in the front end and a lot comes out the back end. Dealing with this is a lot of work. They like to be able to move around and graze. Keeping a horse in a stall in the city might be practical if there were riding trails that were accessible. I wonder how those folks deal with the multiple challenges. We live out in the country and have acreage and pasture and tractors and a manure spreader and a hay baler. Riding on streets is hard on a horses feet and wears out shoes very fast. I wonder where they get a horse shoer? The neighbor has a legitimate gripe about the bugs and smell and noise.

As long as the horse is well fed and we'll cared for and they do something to resolve their issue with the next door neighbor. I say more power to them.

That horse’s owner would be cited for disturbing the peace by animal control around here so quick their heads would spin.

The horse shouldn’t be permitted to affect other people’s quality of life. Primarily by making noise all night.

The title of article is misleading in that not only is there not a law against it, there is a law specifically allowing it.

A guy in the Philly ghetto (it was not ghetto to him, it was/is home, but it sure is a neighborhood in want of some refurbishment) kept a horse in the early 1990s. He had an extra lot on the back of his lot. It was fairly dilapidated as lots go, and the shed for the horse was equally Depression-Era. But the horse had a little space, and the man rode the horse.

I've been here in MT for forty years now. I have seen horses come and go all around me. I would say that if 10% are ridden REGULARLY thats probably a high %.

Iv'e seen them in small enclosures , never ridden, ALL their lives.

WHY folks have them and relegate them to a small, crapped up area, never ridden...astounds me.

Then again drinking, smoking and irresponsibility astound me as well.

based on what I've see driving around, it wouldn't surprise me if there are more than 200 horses within 5 miles of my house

I see a family out riding their Arabian's every few weeks - look like they're well cared for - spotless condition, as is all the tack

A tough day at the coffee shop? Really?

How much do you make working a coffee shop in States Island to afford a decent house, horse, all that goes with it, and then a $5000 stable?

Why wouldn’t Dunkin Donuts serve him on his horse? Did he ride it into the shop?
