For a few years now I have been interested in the possibility of adding solar panels to my workshop and parts of our house to cut down on our power bill and have power in the event of an emergency or storm that could knock our power for a considerable time. Honestly, our power bill is not bad at all. Our home is quite efficient and I am sort of like Lucas Electric/ the prince of darkness constantly turning off lights, TVs etc that my kids leave on. I discovered that Congressman Thomas Massie made his home 100% solar powered by using batteries he sourced from a wrecked Tesla car. He also built a sweet looking solar array but his set up looks pretty expensive. Can anyone point me to a few good sources where I can learn more about setting up solar panels and batteries to augment our power situation at my home and maybe remove some reliance on the power company? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The price of liberty and even of common humanity is eternal vigilance

I am currently looking into a partial solar install to provide auxiliary lighting and power at my remote shed. There is an excellent book which I got off Amazon. "Photovoltaic Design & Installation for dummies" by Ryan Mayfield. Don't let the "for dummies" fool you. It is a very comprehensive book that the average dummy would get lost after the first chapter. Check it out. Awake not woke

Too old to run, too mean to quit! |
My brother up in N. Idaho put in full solar electric in his place on a mountain top. Works really well. As I recall, he uses that to charge his "storage" system. When we lived in upstate NY, we installed a solar hot water system for domestic hot water. Worked well, and paid for itself, but that was more than 30 years ago. No idea what is available now, or what it would cost. Elk There has never been an occasion where a people gave up their weapons in the interest of peace that didn't end in their massacre. Arc posted a very detailed evaluation of solar a while back. If it hasn’t been pruned, search for it.

Our house has 4 panels on the roof, were already there when we moved in & I assume were part of the new construction in 2013. They help cut the electric bill a bit, but we don't have any battery setup to store power, nor do we end up on the surplus side of things. Following, as I'm sure the solar tech has improved dramatically over the last 7 years. Just not sure if it's cost-effective to look into upgrading/adding to the array. The Enemy's gate is down.

Go ahead punk, make my day |
I have thought about it several times - I have enough property for a ground array and plenty of sun in Florida, but it isn't financially viable to drop the coin required for the panels / modification to my electrical system, when compared to the yearly power bills. So it hasn't been worth it.
