gearhoundsReplacement names in place of real ones
It seems that you see this less and less over the years. Anyone go by something other than their regular given name? Shortened forms like Mike in place of Michael don'y count...
As an example, my older brother is James but was christened Chip, as in "Chip off the old block". It is all he has ever been called.

Lord Vaalicmy son goes by The Dude. Nothing to do with Lebowski...
We couldn't decide what to name him and I told my wife we can't just call him hey dude we need to pick a name. Well we kept calling him the dude and it just kind of stuck. Nobody calls him by his name, he is The Dude.

fpuhanMy daughter and son-in-law refer to my five year-old granddaughter as "Peachie," from "cute as a peach." Her given name is Mia.
You can't truly call yourself "peaceful" unless you are capable of great violence. If you're not capable of great violence, you're not peaceful, you're harmless.

V-TailA friend of mine has the habit of laying new, descriptive names on people. Thus, "bicycle boy" (should be self explanatory), "Donut Dude" for a guy who owns a bunch of Dunkin' Donut franchises, and the best one, for a certain female member of SIGforum who packs heat, is "Annie Oakley."
I had an uncle whose parents had not picked a last name when it was time to fill in his birth certificate. Named "Nathaniel" shortly thereafter, but his birth certificate showed "Baby Boy
<family_surname> and he went through life with family calling him "Babe."

At Rotterdam, London, Warsaw and half a hundred other places, they put their rather naive theory into operation. They sowed the wind, and now they are going to reap the whirlwind."

610My #3 grandson is Layton Ryan but nobody knows that. His is "Gus" to everyone. But if his older brothers would of had their way his name would have been Augustus McGrae.

mrmn50My younger daughter, now 45, is still Gump or Gumpers to me. As a 2 year old, she had a bib overall that she wore a lot. When she went to sit on the floor, she looked just like Gump Worseley, a HOF goalie.

PHPaulStep brother's actual name is Chester, but everybody calls him Skip.
Back in the day, I was know as "Foxy" due to my last name being Fox. I was introduced to my wife by that name. It'll be 45 years in August and she still calls me that, visual evidence to the contrary notwithstanding...

YooperSigsTook me years to get rid of my childhood nickname.
In fact, as a cop, if anyone referred to me by my nickname, the arrest probability went way up!
Even though my nickname actually had a police connotation.

tk13My dad had a brother named Anthony that everyone called Fritz, short for Snicklefritz, which was apparently very appropriate.
He had another named Ambrose who everyone called Jake for some unknown reason.

az4783054Everyone that I worked with since 1970 has called me "JW" which was on my uniform name tag. My wife calls me that as well. It's easier to remember, I guess.

my wife was jsut asking this the other night if people around us ask," Do you wonder if his name is really Tomminator?"
I still call the big one Matt-matt, or Fat-matt...(he was a rotund baby) like we did when he was little...he's 26, and his friends look at me funny when i'm around them
