Beach reccomendation in San Diego with a view of the Naval Air Statin on Coronado? Login/Join

We are hoping to drive down to San Diego next week to visit some family and check out the zoo. My wife would like to take the kids to a beach in the afternoon one day. They've never been to San Diego.

I have and the last time I was there I stayed at the Hilton Harbor Island and my room had a great view of the helicopters taking off and coming in and naval ships cruising by on the north side of Coronado. Is there a good family beach in that area that would let the kids play and also see some Navy activity?

I see Coronado Beach. Coronado Dog Beach just outside the base entrance that seems like it is open to public but maybe doesn't have the best view of the helicopter activity area?

And I also see a very small beach across the channel called Grace Beach.

Any intel on either of those?

Shelter Island is about as close as you can get on the north side. They have a public beach called Grace beach there, the water isnt very good to swim in because of all the boats. Coronado is your best bet if you wanna actually get in the water.

Kids love to jump over waves and let the waves chase them. Sounds like Grace isn't idea for that? Also it looks like it is the protected channel, so maybe not much a wave to be found there?

All of this assumes we can get to San Diego from my area... I see a couple of the current fires are very close to I5 on the south side of the Grapevine.

There's not an ideal vantage point and what you will see will vary highly based on the activity levels of the then present moment.

Coronado Beach will be the best.
You'll see all kinds of military aircraft from there and you'll be under the final approach for fixed wing aircraft landing. Depending on activity levels. Shelter Island would be best for Helos and not going into the water.

Coronado Beach sits right below the flightpath for North Island traffic. Park around the Hotel Del, grab a cocktail there, enjoy the view.

The other view of North Island is above it. Go to Cabrillo National Monument at Point Loma. Bring a lunch and some binoculars, and you'll be treated to not only a view of North Island NAS but, also all ships coming & going out of the bay and a slight peak of the submarine base just below.

Point Loma is definitely worth the trip. I took my teenage daughter there and enjoyed the views and also saw some of the filming locations of both Top Gun movies. (The house where Maverick had a talk with Viper about his options and the cemetery where Iceman was buried)

Guess my elevated position at the Hilton was probably better than we'll get on the surface.

The alternate route is Bakersfield to Kramer Junction. Then 395/215/15 to San Diego. 475 miles and 7+35 driving time.

Yes, it adds some time, but you avoid the entire LA fire scene. I've made the trip using this route a few times from Hanford.

Coronado can be fun depending on what the Navy is up that day. I’ve sat and watched helicopter hijinks with guys jumping out and getting pulled back in. I walked down the beach and kept seeing guys run over the berm and roll around in the sand and then jump in the ocean and run back over the berm. I was confused until I remembered BUDs was over the berm. There are pictures of a wedding getting crashed by an amphibious assault. Go to the beach for the beach. Consider any Navy stuff a bonus.

We were having lunch at Tom Ham's Lighthouse one sunny day, and a motor launch came up to the jetty just down from us. Someone threw a mannequin into the water. Shortly after, a seal was sent into the water after the mannequin, retrieved it, brought it up to the boat where it was taken aboard. That was pretty cool. Seal got a fish, of course.
This is a great seafood restaurant on Harbor Island, with a great view of the harbor.

It took me a moment to realize you were talking about a actual seal and not the Navy kind. I was confused what "Seal got a fish" meant in that context.

I eventually caught up.

If you go to Coronado itself then get a bite or beer at Mc P's. http://mcpspub.com/ Greg has passed away, but it's still open.

This is the bar where Chris Kyle and the governor had their altercation

When are you going? I will be in San Diego Feb 28 - March 8. My son is a supervisor of SH-60 airframe maintenance on NASNI, works in HSC-4.

McP's is a good stop. the SEAL's don't hang there much any more, but it's still cool.

.

Ocean temperature around San Diego in January is mid 50s.

If you're planning on swimming, call the hotel and ensure they have a heated pool because the ocean will be painful after a few seconds.

Take them onboard the USS Midway museum, that would be the best - up close - way to see Navy activity.

The San Diego Maritime Museum ( https://sdmaritime.org/visit/o...816-swift-boat-tour/) is a 5 minute walk north of the USS Midway. They have the USS Dolphin submarine tours and rids on a Navy Swift Boat in the harbor.

Whenver I see Viper's house in that film, I think to myself, "He must have invested really well when he was an Ensign." LOL!
