Jack of All Trades, Master of Nothing |
Tonight at team practice was a special moment for me. I got to present one of our archers who is also a personally coached student of mine with his Junior Olympic Indoor Bronze award. The Indoor Bronze is a huge achievement and comes from shooting a score of 285/300 in official conditions. Not only did he shoot his bronze, he shot at the biggest tournament he's ever shot, the US Indoor Target Nationals. It's rarified air indeed for an archer to receive and Olympian award. I read the letter from the CEO of USA Archery congratulating him. I presented him with the letter, certificate, backpack and lanyard quiver pin that USA Archery provides as part of the bronze award. After he sat down I told him to look inside the backpack. Inside I had placed a framed picture of one of his arrows in flight that I took while he was at Nationals this year. He smiled, gave me a huge hug and said, "Thanks coach, I couldn't have done it without you." To which I replied, "You've done all the work, I'm just along for the ride." That's great, man. What's even better than the archery lessons you give to the people you coach are the life lessons that you give them and what they can get from the archery principles. To the degree we influence the lives of other people is the degree we live our lives. "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual."
