Looking forward to cooler weather and the time when I won't be able to go walking or biking, which would you recommend for daily exercise? I started walking and biking a few months ago, and I don't want to lose that motivation over the winter. Is one a better form of exercise?

What's your age? I do the Elliptical because it's the best on your knees but you still get the cardio you need.

I would suggest trying each and seeing what you like best. Of those 3, I prefer an elliptical (I have flat feet), but it really is a personal choice.

I have an Octane XR6 seated elliptical. I really got hooked on these machines in cardio rehab. I purchased mine used as the new ones are a little pricey for me.

As long as you keep the resistance up, you can get a great workout while keeping the impact low on your knees. I always laughed at an elliptical until a friend that's a professional body builder told me that's what he used. I've been using them ever since.

Rowing trumps them all.
A Water Rower in particular is about the beet all around home workout one can do.

I have an elliptical and its a great workout. Got it cheap from a guy who used it as a clothes rack. See what your local classifieds can turn up, you might find any sort of exercise equipment can be found for less than you think.

Another vote for the elliptical. I used to run, road and treadmill, but the knees and hip started acting up. I walk all year round (of course I'm not in Utah) and we bought the elliptical for my wife. She hates it, but does it cause it works. I watch an old Gunsmoke rerun and enjoy my half hour on it daily.

For 10 years I road on a Giant Magnetic Trainer or a CycleOps Air Trainer.
The reason I stopped using them is I have a few extra sq feet and having an exercise bike taking up space was no problem. I picked up a Giant Tempo about 7-8 years old that was like new.

I just checked Ebay. You can find good trainers, ones new to slightly used for under $100 .
Just search for cyclops trainer
Another nice one is - Blackburn Trakstand Ultra Bike Trainer Stand

An elliptical or rowing machine gives you a better workout, more calories burned per unit time, than either a treadmill or stationary bike.

The rower takes up less space than an elliptical, particularly if you get something like a Concept2.

I'm thinking of dumping the gym, expanding my strength training equipment at home, and acquiring a Concept2.

Rower here...Concept2.

I sold the uber expensive elliptical...

I also sold the weights for quality stretch bands.

I am 55 and have lost 65 lbs since last December.

Whichever one you will stick with and use the most. I don't really like cardio(bores the hell out of me) but when I do it I row or ride the bike (Peleton). Don't forget that losing weight is mostly about nutrition. You cannot outwork a bad diet.

Can you tell us what bands you bought, what levels of resistance?
Also, what about TRX straps? Anyone recommend?
Wife really doesn’t want me to go to the gym.

I'm almost 54 and I used to run on an treadmill, but bad knees and lower back issues weren't worth the benefits. I used the elliptical for years, but depending on you height (I'm 6'-4") the stride length could be the limiting factor to comfort. Rowers like the concept 2 is also a great option. I'd go with the rower first. Pick up a few kettleballs while you're at it and add a new dimension to your indoor workouts.

Go elliptical, but make sure it's stabilized. As you build stamina, you will almost inevitably find yourself simply dumping your weight on one foot or the other as you step with one leg after the other. That'll make the machine rock, and could make it tip over.

I use a concept 2 rower.

I lost about 40 pounds and stopped rowing, starting to put on weight again and need to restart.

Most of weight loss comes from the kitchen, the exercise just helps

Hi!

Yes, I was told to use bands instead of straps/strips that come in a box at yoga studios and such.

I bought a nice set off of Amazon by Fit Simplify Resistance. It s a color coded set of bands that comes with varying/stackable resistances along with other attachment items.

They are very versatile in how/where you attach them.

Rower.

Concept 2 rower is the benchmark. A water rower is nice in it's own way, but the Concept 2 is the industry standard for gym and competitive use. I've abused one for years at my CrossFit gym and now have one for myself because of the pandemic.

Rowing can provide a full body, strength building workout--not just cardio.
