Have someone filming while you poke it with a stick, only way to know what you're dealing with

Haha.

Post a photo of a dead one and we can ID it. My guess is bumble bees or yellow jackets.

I agree with using carb cleaner.
It starts melting their exoskeleton immediately.
Wrap yourself up as protective as you can, use a nozzle on the can and penetrate the nest with it and empty the can in the nest.
Have an area to which you can run to after the attack where no body else will be in danger from the "retaliation". Have an electric fly swatter ready and waiting for you there. That will help when the escapees come after you.

This sounds like fun. can I help? I'll bring my own can.

So, how did this shake out?
Did you get stung to hell and back, or walk away unscathed?

A night raid on the enemy compound wiped out most of the enemy. Right after the raid some lines of rain showers started marching through the area. There were a few survivors, so a secondary strike has been planned when the rain lets up. More ordinance will be needed from the H Depot. Haven’t determined the enemy’s nationality, but they are nowhere as large as the ones in the photos. Could their smallish size be an indication of Asian ancestry? I don’t know, but they are quite skilled at flying. I’m not real sure about the Asian thing because they would get upset if our Japanese car was idling too close to their nest.

What do they look like? If they’re small and yellow/black and agile flyers, my money is on Yellowjackets. They can vary in size but regardless, mature nests run from a couple of hundred to thousands. Are you sure the nest is completely in the leaf pile? If there is a hole in the bed, the nest may be under the bed itself. A pic of one of the war dead is in order.
