My remote isn't working anymore. The proximity functions aren't working (ie - when I step up to the door and pull on the handle, the door no longer automatically unlocks). The buttons don't work (to lock/unlock the doors). The car doesn't start with the remote in the pocket (it will start if I hold the remote to the Start button as directed).

The remote went through the Speed Queen. When it took it out, it was wet outside but actually pretty dry inside. It does have some gaskets for water resistance so it was surprisingly dry.

I left it open and dried it out. The remote buttons still actually worked at the time so I thought it was okay.

I'm wondering if the battery is dead (resulting from / coincidentally?). So, I'll try to replace that later today.

But otherwise, is this remote dead? Or can I recover it (does it need to be reprogrammed or something?)? Any ideas? These suckers are $300.

Battery replacement first, then go from there if it doesn't fix it.

My bet is that will fix it.

Thanks. Yup, I'll replace the battery later today as soon as I can find one in the store. Hopefully it'll be a common type.

Fingers crossed that it's the battery and just coincidental that it died after going through the Speed Queen.

What model remote? That may help.

Some of the Key & Remote all in ones are cheap to replace the remote part. IE recent Hondas.

Those conveniences sure can get us in trouble, I still just use a screw driver in the ignition of my outfit, very few know how to start it or shift any more.

Manual Ts are definitely a good theft deterrent.

Make sure you pull the battery out and verify what type before you look around. I had to replace mine the other day. A CR1616 wasn't the easiest one to find on short notice and ended up at the auto parts store.

Batteries. Same thing happened on my wife's 2012 Rav4, holding the remote near the ignition button is their failsafe.

How does the remote near the Start work? I assume that there is no dependency on electronics but then how does the car identify a remote assigned to the car?

Had one of mine go through the washer. Did not work opened it up and was wet inside. Took it apart as much as I could let it sit out a week to make sure everything dryed out good. Tried it got nothing. Got a new battery for it, worked fine ever since then.

The 2010 to current model Lexus vehicles use CR1632 and CR1616 Panasonic® batteries, which can be obtained through a Lexus dealer, electrical appliance shop or camera shop. For previous model year vehicles, please refer to your vehicle's Owner's Manual or remove the Smart Key cover to visually see. You may need a small screwdriver to remove the cover.

Walmart list the CR1632 for less than $5 for two:

It uses a RFID type of system. With the battery, the remote sends out a short range field the car picks up on. Without it, the remote needs to be close enough to the car's trasmitter/receiver to activate the chip.

After 3-1/2yrs the battery in my FOB died having the exact same symptoms. Replaced it and alls working perfectly. I now keep a 4pk of CR 2032's in the glove box just in case. Though at 3-1/2yrs I can live with it. I love the proximity features, especially the fact that the doors or trunk will not lock if the FOB is inside the car!

Good luck, k. Those buggers are crazy expen$ive. Working with the "closer" on my Jeep, he offered us several optional coverage/service packages. For $200, we took the fob coverage. Cheap insurance.

Or buying a new car. (Some folks used to buy a new car when the ash tray filled up, I'm told--this would seem a better cause.)

Yup, battery...the old one just decided to give up the ghost after all the agitation it's gone through lately.

Well, it's not the battery.

I guess I'm out $300 for a new key.

I wonder if it's possible to shrink wrap the key....
