“Blasting prostate cancer with sound waves eliminates tumours in nearly two thirds of patients, a study suggests.

The technique - which uses precise pulses of ultrasound to attack tumours in a session lasting less than an hour - could mean many men avoid surgery.

Researchers from the University of California at Los Angeles, who tested the technology on 115 men with prostate cancer, saw tumours destroyed in 80 per cent of men they treated.

And 65 per cent of patients were still clear of cancer a year later. Some 47,000 men each year develop prostate cancer in the UK.
……
The new treatment, called MRI-guided transurethral ultrasound ablation - or TULSA - comes with few of those side effects, the researchers said.

TULSA works by delivering precise doses of sound waves to diseased prostate tissue while sparing surrounding healthy nerve tissue.

It works using on a rod-shaped device, inserted into the urethra, which sends out sound waves from 10 ultrasound-generating elements.

The elements are controlled automatically by a software algorithm that can adjust the shape, direction and strength of the therapeutic ultrasound beam.

The procedure takes place in an MRI scanner so that doctors can closely monitor treatment and assess the degree and location of heating…”

Yeah, sure: I’d rather have my belly cut open and an organ pulled out rather than anything stuck up my dick.

At least my ability to predict what one of the first posts would be after reading about the procedure is undiminished. Roll Eyes

Not to mention still having your functioning prostate.

The final verdict on these treatments is a decade out.
Does it cure the problem, postpone the problem, how long, cause other problems, etc.

And I would wager you are asleep when it happens.
Anecdote and thread drift:
I have had Percutaneous (through my back) and Uretoscopic (Through my dick) procedures for my kidney stones.
I very MUCH prefer the uretoscopic. Procedure by 0800, home by noon, straight enough that evening to drive to dinner.
PCNL? procedure at 0800, all day and night in the hospital, lots of tubes, severe lingering pain, healing time even once home....
I'll take "Run that thing up my Pee-hole" for $1000 every time, Alex.

I would be concerned about "cancer cell displacement".... ie cancer cell being ejected from the site and migrating to form metastatic disease. Due to the blood supply/venous drainage, most often prostate mets form in the spine.

Well, I had prostate cancer several years ago. I was treated by a specialist in IMRT. Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy. Used X-rays rather than hard radiation. 5 days a week for 39 treatments. No medication needed. The driving to the treatment facility got to be a challenge.

My doctor told me to quit having the checks after 2 years of monitoring.

Painless treatment and I heartily recommend it.

It may be old news now, tho, as I have had no reason to follow the technology.

Been the prostate cancer route.
Had a radical prostatectomy in December of 2016.
1. There is no reason I know of in this day to have your taint carved like a turkey. Da Vinci robotic surgery with a fellowship trained surgeon is the ticket.
2. My concern with this new method would be, as mentioned earlier the results 10 years out or so and, also mentioned earlier, cancer cells being set loose to do damage elsewhere, notably the spine and pelvic girdle area.
3. Getting the urethra “scoped” isn’t that big of a deal. Had it done to have a look into the bladder at a stone. No pain killer for that. Came back 2 days later to get scoped again under anesthesia to break up the stone and remove. I did ask the nurse for the first one if they could use an infant size scope and if I took a cialis would it be easier? She just rolled her eyes and said all us men are the same.

Sounds promising but the 65 percent number after a year would need a lot of improvement it seems before being ready for prime time.

Ablation such as this is used often with good results in the liver for tumors where traditional surgery is not possible.

Nope, had it done last year. Interesting part of the procedure was two young girls doing the prep.

I wonder what they talk about during "Girls night out".

Timely. Saw my urologist today. Going to do an MRI to check the prostate. Probably next month. Currently - chronic enlargement, no cancer.
Frequency in urination has gone up in recent months. MRI is first step to gain information on what to do next.

Any tips from those that have been there, done that?

I had that done about fifteen years ago and I think they used a re-purposed garden hose. Eek (indeed)

Had another within the last year. After putting the uro off for months I relented and yep, tech has progressed, a piece of cake.
