What about the minors? Do they need to secure their stolen guns? Does the crime of not securing track back to the person they stole it from? What about convicted felons? Since they shouldn’t have one to begin with, are they required to follow this sage advice?

So many questions…

Can't really lay this one at DPD's feet. This results from a new state law that goes into effect Feb. 13th of this year.

As an aside: I suspect Michigan's leftist-dominated Legislature and leftist Governor didn't think this one through very thoroughly. (Surprise!) This new law, and the prosecution of offenders, will almost certainly "disproportionately" affect A Particular Demographic, because, in most cases, it is that particular demo that most often appears in the "news" when yet another child is injured or killed as a result of people carelessly leaving unsecured firearms about in the presence of unsupervised children.

While I whole heartedly endorse the safe/responsible storage of firearms I have to wonder has anybody, anywhere, ever used a cable lock? I have literally never heard of or seen anybody ever use one.

Christ I have enough of the damn things to partner with a bike shop.

Like nukeandpave and ensigmatic said this is part of a group of laws that were pushed through the legislature quickly after the MSU Campus shooting.

We also now will have long gun registration for the first time as part of this package despite the fact that the Campus incident was committed with a handgun, those have been subject to registration here since 1927. The one bright spot in that law is that long guns owned prior to February 13, 2024 do not have to be retroactively registered.

But the safe storage law, yes it makes plenty of sense for responsible persons but I don’t foresee a lot of compliance in urban areas.

Isn't it still a matter whether a local jurisdiction will enforce a state regulation?

Yeah, I do, to secure my lock box to my truck frame when I have to go into a gov't approved free fire zone.

I don't think those are big enough to secure "minors" but I like the way you think.

Unfortunately that has nothing to do with Detroit, it's a new state law.

Doesn’t this law run directly against the ruling in Heller?

While we’re passing laws that people with common sense already know, why don’t they just all encompass and pass one that doesn’t allow criminals or dumbasses to own firearms.

Hell, let’s put safety ties on pedos and repeat offenders when minors are in the vicinity.

I do not believe so. The law states (quoting from an MCRGO summary):
quote:
Firearms being stored or left unattended must be unloaded and locked with a locking device or stored in a locked box or container if it is reasonably known that a person under 18 is or is likely to be present on the premises.
I think the key words there are "stored or left unattended."

That's how most of these things we've seen reported in the local "news" happen: Somebody leaves a loaded firearm laying about--in an unlocked drawer, stuffed under a pillow or couch cushion, or even just sitting atop a table somewhere, they leave children unattended, children find gun, tragedy results.

I don't expect the law to accomplish much except to add another item to the charge sheet when it happens again. The kind of people who will know of the new law aren't the kind of people for whom it was written and the kind of people for whom it was written aren't the kind of people likely to be informed or to abide by the law even so.

Here’s how the new law will shake out- conservatives in violation will be criminals complicit in “gun violence”; anyone else will be victims of “gun violence” because guns are bad.

There is a slick "public service message" on the tube where a small child asks "Dad, do we have a gun in the house"?
The kid should ask:
"Dad, do we have a car in the garage"?
"Dad, do we have Fentanyl in the house"?
We want to save lives, right? Roll Eyes

Florida has similar statues requiring securing firearms if you have a minor in the household, it doesn't say you have to keep them unloaded, but you do have to have it secured.

Pretty sure most states have similar statues regarding firearms access and minors in a house, albeit without the "unloaded" requirement.

"Section 790.174, Florida Statutes, requires a loaded firearm in the home to be stored in a locked box container or secured with a trigger lock if the owner reasonably knows that a child under the age of 16 can gain access to the firearm. A violation of this law is a misdemeanor."
