Does anyone know if the Amazon Echo Dot records conversation without you pressing the button? I know the other devices are always listening because they have to listen for the wake up command but the way I understand the Dot is that you have to physically press a button before it begins listening. If you are only here to trash the smart devices please don't bother. I am not buying one. Near as I can tell, both Amazon listening devices are always listening unless you purposely disable the microphone with the mute button. "America is at that awkward stage. The only difference with the dot is that it has a shitty internal speaker. Other than that it is the same. I am streaming to mine now. I use the line out to a stereo receiver and that drives my floor speakers. Works great. Check out the echo dash. That's what you might be seeking. Only works via button. This is not verified, but I believe that it records everything locally until it hears it's keyword. The local storage is re-written every 60 seconds. So it's not sending anything it hears to the cloud until it hears the "Alexa" or whatever you tell it to listen for. Interesting, it's been in the news that Marriott will be bringing Alexa devices into their hotel rooms. Also interesting that the DoD has a contract with Marriott. | |||

Exactly. Lots of folks worry about the Amazon echo or Google home devices, but still carry a smart phone that's always listening. And the phone has a camera and GPS. | |||

You can disable Siri and OK Google and on Android at least, you can force every app to ask permission to use your microphone, location and camera. You still have a perfectly functioning phone. An Echo with the mic disabled is worthless. My mother got one for my daughter and it stays in her room with the door closed. | |||

Yep, the Dash is just an Amazon reorder device, that will use your WiFi to order whatever you have programmed it to do when you push its button (just a small plastic stick-up gadget that has a button and a product logo). Dash devices are specific to a particular set of products assigned to them (one Dash may be just for paper towels for example), and you can program them not to reorder anything until the previous product you ordered has arrived. It has no speakers, microphones or any other function. I assume it has a battery, but none of mine have ever run down, and there are virtual "Dash" buttons you can program on your Amazon account. It's handy if you purchase recurring items (like paper towels) through Amazon - just stick the button over your paper towel stash, and push it when you're running out.This message has been edited. Anyone who knowingly lets OK Google, Siri or Alexa into their house or place of work is asking for trouble. I cannot see much good of having anyone or anything listening into your conversations even if it is 60 seconds at a time. Who is to say that they don't record the entire stream and then run it through whatever processors they desire. Ask yourself if the government or military would allow these type of intrusive devices into their areas. | |||
