Tundra/F150 shopping continues. Do Platinum Tundras have Air Ride like the Sequoia (pg 3)
$2500 in parts is nothing as you know. I would not buy Ford based on that alone. I do not dislike Ford and I completely agree with you about the Eco vs a true V8

For $25k you can find a great Tundra. No it will not compare in gidgets and gadgets which I could care less about. Give me a real truck that will provides years of amazing service and little to no mechanical trouble and will retain the highest amount of value by leaps and bounds over anything else.

Probably because it is the "classic" body and not the new 5th generation. Still good trucks, just not the new generation.

My brother has an F150 with a crew cab, maybe 2-3 year old. I was shocked by the amount of room in the cab. They have three kids and while they have a minivan they can put everyone in the truck when needed.

I have lots of time in both. In the end I’ll be fine with either from a driving stand point.
Toyota wins in the reliability and longevity department.

As for the minivan I had one for a year before the Expedition and it was absolute misery.

I don't get the undying love for the Tacoma's. They are DATED as fuck. Interior is from the 1990's in my opinion and the seating position is weird.

DRUM rear brakes! Yet the prices for the various models are IMHO very expensive.

Buy what you want but I just don't get the love for the Taco's at current prices.

Coming out of a 2011 F150 with the 5.0 to a 2018, also a 5.0 I have to say that the newer truck is an improvement in about 90% of the things I liked on my 11. Three things I miss:
1. I went from a 3.55 gear ratio to a 3.31. The 3.55 had more low end acceleration
2. The 6 speed trans was seamless. The 10 speed occasionally makes rough shifts at low speeds. Once it hits 6th gear it's just fine.
3. The E-locker is pretty much worthless for anything other than rock climbing (which might appeal to you). When it's locked, it's LOCKED. Anything other than a straight line makes it very unhappy and it unlocks above 25 mph.

I am a huge fan of the aluminum body because it can't rust. The trim levels are the same but the newer one just looks and feels nicer. The seats are nicer and DW got her own 8 way.

Slightly off topic, but that is a huge plus. I have seen drum brake trucks with hundreds of thousands of miles on the original parts. I have seen disk brake trucks needing backing plates and other such silliness in 30K. Don't add squat to the braking capability and for sure add cost...

My 2.7TT had the 3.31 & E-locker.

No complaints with performance, but I was coming from a 2004 Civic. Didn't drive any with the 3.55 or 3.73 so can't directly compare.

Never had any need to lock the rear end.

If you intend to increase tire size you should really put some weight towards the 3.55 axle ratio.

As a commuter the 3.31 is just fine, off road use low range, it’ll be just fine. If you do plenty of urban driving and want to get rolling quickly you’ll be mashing the gas harder than need be. The E locker might not be the greatest from a drivability standpoint, certainly not on pavement, be careful on snow and ice. But, it’s pretty much the only game in town from the factory.

What I suspect is that the 10 speed has a faster (smaller numeric) high gear as well. Multiply the top trans ratio by the rear gear and you'll see the actual difference when you compare the 6 speed/3.55 to the 10 speed/3.31. I'll do some digging and get back to you.

They look to be close to the same size, with the Group 65 being a few sixteenths of an inch shorter in length. If the posts are correctly oriented, and it fits the battery tray, and the battery hold down works or can be made to work, then there should be no problem.

Been reading up on the F150 and the Tundra looking at my aftermarket off-road options and the Tundra options edge out the Ford.
I’ll be able to sell these parts easy enough I do believe. Now just need a free day to get them pulled off.
There is a 2013 Tundra Rock Warrior with 55k miles not too far away. Hopefully it will be around in a couple weeks.

Buy a Land Cruiser. Most of your stated purpose relates to off-roading / overlanding and I think full-size trucks are a tougher fit for that plan.

IIRC, it was only the bicycles and fishing poles that you listed in favor of a truck bed? I’d rethink your overall needs.

A Land Cruiser as a trail rig is on the list and I’ll get there eventually.

First and foremost it all boils down to I just want a truck I don’t want an SUV. My boys love riding in a truck over the SUV.
Second 3 car seats and all the kids crap must fit. 3 car seats across the middle row of a 100 is super tight. I can’t afford a 200 series.

A truck will serve my off-roading/overlanding wants until the LC trail rig is purchased.

I understand. I bought a new LC in ‘02. In ‘12, I decided to replace it with a new Tundra, primarily to avoid using a trailer to routinely haul stuff. My wife took over the LC for a few years and delayed its sale.

Today, I still own & use both. Combined mileage exceeding 430K. They are very different vehicles. You just need to decide how much / often you haul stuff that can travel in an exterior bed.

By the way, I’ve yet to ever use the stupid 3rd row seats in my LC!

Yup, Wife’s Suburban will handle all the SUV stuff and the truck will handle my stuff.
The off-roading around here is easily handled by full size pick up trucks.

I paid off the Expedition but of course due to Covid the Clerks office is closed they are doing everything by mail only and they are working on 1/3 staff.
Who knows when I’ll get my clear title.

Guess if I get a chance to make it to check out the 2013 Rock Warrior maybe $500 down will suffice as a hold till I get my title back.

I had a 2010 F150 5.4L Lariat 4x4 which I upgraded in 2018 to a 2018 F150 XLT 4x4 FXT with 5.0 with the 10 speed. I had no significant problems with either truck. The 2010 needed A/C work at 134k miles, but that's to be expected in Florida.

I find that the Fords seem to have the best balance of features, driveability, reliability, power and interior space.

There isn't one thing about mine with which I am dissatisfied, and if I drive with care, I get 18mpg around town with nearly 400 hp on tap.

The late model Fords are excellent trucks.
