Picked up a nifty travel watch (Glycine Airman Purist)

AglifterPicked up a nifty travel watch (Glycine Airman Purist)
For ~$360 on Jomashop. Some versions were $460. Not sure there's anything Swiss about it, anymore, and the original retail would be completely out of line, but it seems like a good option for overseas wear - and, its a 24 hour watch. (I prefer 24 hour time, and the only other 24 mechanical watches, TMK, are the very cheap Russian ones, or a Breathing w. a very complicated dial.)

42mm or 44mm? Silver or black dial?

I understand about the purist 24 hour attraction. But having retired from the military, mentally changing a standard 12 hour time into 24 was second nature. So my 2002 vintage Glycine (a 46mm Airman 46) has a standard 12 hour movement and ability to set 3 different timezones.

stickman428Hahhahahahhah BigSwede! Thank you for the laugh my friend.
Arglifter, there is most certainly something swiss about your watch, it’s movement. It’s probably got a Sellita movement in there if I had to bet. They are great movements. Glycine took a beating among watch enthusiasts when Invicta acquired them but in my experience with 6 glycine watches 5 post acquisition they are still every bit as solid and quality as they were before. I moderate a group on social media dedicated to Glycine watches though the combat and combat subs are more my area of specialty.
I gifted my father a blue version of the latest Vintage style Glycine combat sub auto with the sandy texture dial. He loved it and says he gets compliments all the time in the office. I got myself a black version. The dials on these watches are gorgeous.
I don’t have an Airman but I’ve heard lots of good things about them.
Right now this is my favorite Glycine but the Red Radar ref: GL0080 Is also one of my favorites

hbablerStickman, how does the finish stand up on those PVD coated ones?
I really like the Red Radar GL0080 you referred to and jomashop has it in stock. I would like an automatic to wear at work, but I don’t want one that will look like crap after I bang it on the fire engine a couple of times. Will a Glycine hold up to it?

stickman428So far so good. My GL0080 is more of a beater watch that I like to wear when doing yard work. I have knocked it around a little bit on tables, chairs etc and have yet to wear off any of the finish. It’s actually taken a chunk out of my kitchen table and didn’t get a single mark.
I have seen some well worn PVD watches that have withstood quite a bit more abuse than my Glycine. They actually don’t look too bad as they break in and start to get some wear. Sort of like the small surface wear you would see on a duty pistol that’s been in and out of a holster for a few years. It’s mostly the bracelet/ clasp that will show wear. I fixed this issue by doing what I always do and swapping it over to a black 22mm shark mesh bracelet.
Other than a small scratch on the bezel insert I can’t find any wear on mine and I bought this one used on the fleabay.
If Darth Vader wore an automatic diver I like to think he would wear something like this.

WarhorseYou guys are a bunch of enablers!
Almost bought this Combat model till I came to my senses, and realized I don't need a 9th wristwatch in my herd.

parabellumWhat's a travel watch? Can't you travel with any watch?
August 20, 2020, 10:04 AM
stickman428A watch able to track multiple time zones at the same time is typically referred to as a travel watch but yeah any watch can be a travel watch. The Glycine Airman was loved by pilots because of its ability to track multiple time zones simultaneously.
This GMT Steinhart for example has a 12hr dial and 24hour bezel. The extra hand (in this example the hand with the green triangle) is for the second time zone which you can set easily.

medic451Interesting that this popped up. I found my dads Glycine Airman in a tool box. Any idea what this one is worth?

AglifterYou can check the various sites. If you decide to sell it, let me know. I know the pumpkin Vietnam-era ones have some collectors.
I would think watch u seek would be a better place for info

stylophilesWell.... thanks guys.
This thread solved my need for a new “work watch” with the tip about Glycine at Jomashop.
Got a NATO strap coming, cause the supplied strap is really horrible. Other than the strap, this thing is awesome. I remember photographing these years ago for catalog work, they had some “interesting” designs.... The Airman 7, huge thing with three separate movements driving three dials on the display. I think it was something like a 53mm case.
This one is a comparatively modest 46, just right!
