Are you using a guide? I'm thinking you might want to talk with a guide or a tackle shop close to where you're fishing before you stock up on lures. What worked last year or last month might not work when you're there.

Terminal tackle too. A few seasons back I had a nice salmon on (probably a chinook) and right when my rig was within eyesight the old (pre internet Cabelas) snap swivel at the head of my rig bent out. I would hate to have that happen on an Alaskan trip!

Agree with the posters that said both:

don't use the old monofilament

replace with braided.

I lived in Alaska 5 years and when I fished without a guide my gear had 65lb braided on it. It was as thin as 12 lb monofilament.

Mono stretches too much imo. I like Yo-Zuri Hybrid. 600 yds at Bass Pro is $11-13.

I'd check with the guide- He knows exactly what you need and might have it on hand.

People probably show up with tons of useless stuff.

You might mention where you plan on fishing at up there. A few of us checked it out for you last year and might be able to give ya a few pointers....

Would you risk this for 10 dollars of fishing line? thats a 800 dollar rod and reel sitting under water next to me Getting my hands on this fish was more important.



depending on the fish your after like chinook salmon I use 65 lb power pro for coho I use 35 and for steelhead like this one 17 lb Berkley nanofil. with 12 lb seaguar sts leader.

I put new line on my bait-cast and trolling reels every two years. Even every year if I was lucky enough to get out a lot the previous season. When I get a hog Chinook on the line, I do not want it to break off due to fatigued line. I replace my fly-line tippet before every trip. Also need to sharpen your hooks before every trip, if you are trolling. (or use new ones). It really makes a difference. Just ask any guide. You can lose a lot of fish via gear failure.

THAT is a VERY nice fish, my friend. Nice work. Sand shrimp, eggs, or a fly? Olympic peninsula or BC?
