Went and watched our son swear in and ship to Paris Island for 13 weeks of boot camp. We're so proud of him but at the same time very anxious.

Seems like a reasonable reaction to me. Pride in your son's decision to serve his Country and concern for all that military service entails. Congrats on raising a young man willing to take on those responsibilities!

You think you are proud now, if at all possible make the trip for his graduation. It will almost be as if he is reborn.

You will see a new man, a Marine. You'll think they changed him, and in a way they will have done so but only because you provided the upbringing to deliver the appropriate raw material.

From one old jarhead, thank you for keeping the club going. Thank him for his service and thank you for entrusting him to the Corps.

The marines will take good care of your son.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

This. I am not a particularly emotional guy, but I teared up when I watched my grandson graduate. Went from a boy to a man in 13 weeks.

Congratulations for being great parents that produced a man who wants to be a United States Marine! You and your wife can be justifiably proud! I sent my only son to West Point at the height of the Iraq war. I was reduced to tears. That surprised me. It's because we love them. Perfectly normal. Read Psalm 91. It was written for you and your son. Helped us tremendously. Lord Bless you all!

Two things bring me to tears. The unconditional Love of God,the service of the United States Military, past, present, and future.

I would rather meet

Went through this twice with son and daughter. Didn't get easier. But the pride you will share with him on the other side (especially if you can get to the graduation) makes up for it.

This. I was more proud to have my parents meet my drill instructors than any teacher at high school graduation.

Stated perfectly! Congratulations to you and your wife. Your son will be a changed man in about 13 weeks.
