Shifting gears so to speak away from that wrecked GSXR track bike that recently caught my eye....I located a Kawasaki KZ750 Twin. It is a bike I've been watching on Craigslist drop in price for the past few months. I shot an offer to the owner that I felt was low but fair and to my surprise he took my offer.

The bike is a 1978 and apparently has 3200 ORIGINAL MILES. It has a small dent in the tank but from the pics it looks to be in pretty good shape. From the brief research I've done on these "big twins" they appear to have solid motors. It ain't a done deal yet but it's looking like Stickman is about to let the good times roll and pick up a Kawasaki!

Anyone here ever have one of these?

But anyway, a guy I worked with 30 years ago had that same bike. Rode it year round. Not great winter weather either. He liked it quite a bit as I remember.

It looks decent stock. I was originally thinking of modifying it but it's intact and looks pretty good. It needs tires and brakes. Maybe scrambler style tires? I don't think I would cafe it though with that parallel twin it could pull off the cafe look pretty nicely. I'd love to have the skills to fabricate a Triumph Scrambler style headers and exhaust. Compared to the damn R1 this should be fairly easy to get road worthy.

The KZs are good bikes and are quite fast. A buddy owned a KZ1000 and wished he'd have never sold it.

This is an 1984 450 I owned a few years back and I loved that bike.

Nice! I missed out on a bike very much like that one a while back. It woulda been a 10 hr road trip to pick it up though. My first motorcycle was a Kawasaki and I've been wanting to get a KZ twin in my garage for a looooooooooooong time now. Thankfully this one is pretty close. So far the record is a 11 hour round trip to pick up my beloved Honda CB-1. (It was absolutely worth that drive)

I suppose I could do mods that can be undone. Like a different tank, seat etc.

But I would try this first before ditching that dented tank.

I had an '82 KZ750 twin. It was a good bike.
I put new pistons and rings in mine, as well as rebuilding the top end. Valve shims are really hard to come by, but other than that it was pretty easy to work on. I had a lot of fun with it before we started having kids and I decided to sell it.

Classic UJM. Good, solid, dependable if somewhat plain vanilla bikes. Not terribly powerful, suspension and brakes are a HUGE step down from today's standards. Vibration is either a bug or a feature, depending on your point of view

If you want it, get it, hard to go wrong as long as you know what to expect. Should be a shit-ton of parts out there.

PHPaul, I figured it would be prone to vibrating a bit. Do you think it will be pretty torquey? It's certainly not a powerhouse engine.

After my recent adventure riding a R1 I have discovered riding a fast bike fast is fun but riding a slow bike fast is also very fun.


Georgrair, my wife HATES motorcycles. It might sound odd but I find motos more interesting than women. Especially the classics.

I'm digging the patina or mild rat bike/aged look of these two KZ twins.

The bike I was on the night of my big crash was its little brother. Good bike. Saved my life that night.

A friend had one back in the day. Damn, that bike had balls and speed!
He could make the front wheel easily come up off the road in third gear just by cracking the throttle.

There's a variant on that dent removal the unique.

Put 3oz of FFFG black powder into a cup, place cup into can, then light the gas vapors. Every dent and ding gone in an instant.

The tank also holds more gas afterward.

That dent pulling video has to be a joke.
Ever light a tank with gas fumes in it? A boom or a Woof, not a progressive burn like gunpowder.
